Major Awards Breakdown
Rookie of the Year: The Rookie of the Year Award is given out by Major League Baseball every year to the best new player in each league. The Baseball Writers’ Association of America (BBWAA) votes on these awards, which go to the best rookie performances in both the American and National Leagues.

This famous award has a long history in baseball. The Chicago chapter of the BBWAA started giving out local awards in 1940. The tradition went national in 1947 when Jackie Robinson won the first award. Every year since then, the award has been split between the two leagues, making sure that new talent gets the recognition it deserves.
Manager of the Year: Since 1983, Major League Baseball has given the Manager of the Year Award to the best strategists in the sport. Every year, one great manager from the American League and one great manager from the National League win this award for leading their teams to victory.
Thirty members of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America vote on the managers of each league. They give points to the top three choices based on where they are in the list. The person with the most points in their league wins the award. It’s a tough process that picks the manager who had the biggest effect on their team’s year.

Cy Young Awards: The Cy Young Award is given to the best pitcher in each league every season. The Baseball Commissioner Ford C. Frick created this famous award in 1956 to honor the late Hall of Famer Cy Young, who changed the game by being so good on the mound before he died in 1955.
At first, only one pitcher from all of MLB won this award each year. In 1967, though, the award changed to honor both leagues equally, giving pitchers from both the American League and the National League their own awards. Today, these two awards honor the great pitchers who anchor their teams’ rotations and have great seasons.
MVP Awards: The MVP Award is the highest individual honor in baseball. It goes to the player who had the biggest impact on the game each season. Every year, one team from the American League and one team from the National League win this important trophy. The Baseball Writers’ Association of America has been giving out these awards since 1931 to honor the superstars who made their teams better than the rest. Every player wants to win this trophy.

Who are the finalists for the 2025 MLB Awards?
AL MVP Award finalists: Aaron Judge was the talk of the American League MVP race going into awards season. He had the best all-around offensive production of all his top competitors. Both Cal Raleigh and José Ramírez made strong cases for the award, each with their own great campaigns. Raleigh stood out because he led the league in home runs and RBIs, even though Judge’s overall numbers were hard to beat. The three finalists all had something special to offer on the diamond, but Judge’s consistent performance across the board gave him the edge in the MVP race.
NL MVP Award finalists: Shohei Ohtani was the favorite to win the National League MVP award when the conversation started. His ability to dominate both sides of the ball in ways that are rarely seen in modern baseball set him apart from the rest of the field. Kyle Schwarber and Juan Soto put up good fights, but Ohtani’s unique two-way brilliance was almost impossible to match. His combination of great hitting and great pitching made for a story that the baseball world couldn’t stop talking about.

AL Cy Young Award finalists: Tarik Skubal is the clear favorite to win the Cy Young Award. He has an impressive ERA and leads the American League in advanced pitching metrics that matter most. Garrett Crochet and Hunter Brown both had great seasons for their teams, but Skubal stands out because he was so good on the mound.
NL Cy Young Award finalists: Paul Skenes became the clear favorite to win the National League Cy Young Award this season, thanks to his better ERA and WHIP numbers that put him ahead of the rest of the field. Cristopher Sánchez and Yoshinobu Yamamoto both did well for their teams, but Skenes’ amazing pitching stats made him the clear winner for the award.
AL Rookie of the Year finalists: Nick Kurtz of the Athletics was the clear favorite to win the 2025 AL Rookie of the Year Award over his teammate Jacob Wilson and Roman Anthony of the Red Sox because of how well he played offensively. Kurtz was the best rookie in some important statistical categories, while Wilson had a high batting average, and Anthony did well in a smaller sample size before an injury cut his season short.

NL Rookie of the Year finalists: Drake Baldwin of the Atlanta Braves is the 2025 NL Rookie of the Year because he was the favorite. He did better than other finalists, Caleb Durbin and Cade Horton, in important offensive categories. Horton was also a strong candidate for starting pitcher, even though he didn’t get many innings because of an injury.
AL Manager of the Year finalists: Three great field generals are fighting for the 2025 AL Manager of the Year award. John Schneider led the Blue Jays to 94 wins and the AL East title, even though Vladimir Guerrero Jr.’s contract problems and the team’s starting rotation problems. Stephen Vogt, the defending champion, led Cleveland to another Central title despite a shaky offense and Emmanuel Clase’s suspension. Dan Wilson had an immediate effect in his first full season as manager of the Mariners. He led Seattle to its first AL West title in almost 25 years.
NL Manager of the Year finalists: Three great candidates are competing for the National League Manager of the Year award on Tuesday, November 11, after 7 p.m. ET. Terry Francona brought new life to Cincinnati. He led the Reds back to the playoffs for the first time in more than ten years, even though their offense struggled at first. Last year’s NL winner, Pat Murphy, wants to win again after leading the Brewers to the best record in baseball and handling injuries with surgical precision. Even though Aaron Nola and Zack Wheeler were hurt a lot during the season, Rob Thomson kept the Phillies focused on winning the East crown.
