How the MLB World Series Prize Pool Works

Every October, MLB sets aside some of the money from playoff tickets to give to teams that make the playoffs. Here’s how it works: half of all wild card gate receipts go into the pot, plus 60% from the first three Division Series games and 60% from all four Championship Series matchups. The team that wins the World Series gets the most money, and the team that comes in second gets the second most. Once the money’s collected, each organization decides how to divide it up among its people. They vote to make “shares” that are given out to everyone in the franchise, including players, coaches, trainers, and anyone else who helped the team make it to the playoffs.

Prize Money for the 2025 World Series Champion

Let’s talk about real money. The Los Angeles Dodgers won it all in 2024 and split the prize money. Each full share was worth about $447,000. Not too bad. Even though the Yankees lost, they still got $354,571 for each share. Depending on how full the stadiums are in October, the winner this year should get about the same amount of money. But to be honest, the money is just a bonus.

The Dodgers are going for back-to-back championships, which hasn’t happened since the Yankees’ dynasty from 1998 to 2000. The Blue Jays are back in the Fall Classic for the first time in more than 30 years.

Payouts for the Runner-Up and Other Playoff Teams

In the postseason, teams split up an enormous pot of cash that comes from ticket sales for the first few playoff games. That pool reached a record $129.1 million last year. We’re still waiting to see the final number for 2025 because it all depends on how many fans show up.  The winner of the World Series gets 36% of the pool, and the second-place team gets 24%. The two teams that lost in the LCS get 24% of the prize money, the four teams that lost in the Division Series get 13%, and the four teams that lost in the WC get 3%.

The deeper you go in October, the more money you get. Each team splits its share into “shares,” which are given to players, coaches, and staff members. The players themselves decide who gets full shares and who gets partial ones. They can decide how to divide the playoff bonus, which is a nice prize for making it to the big dance.
