Feels like clashes between MLB staff and team staff aren’t going to end this season! And well, that’s only sparking up the drama and thrills of baseball. The matchup between the Twins and Giants just gave us another glimpse of the same.
In a game packed with tension and unexpected turns, it was Twins manager Rocco Baldelli who stole the spotlight, and not with a pitching change or lineup shuffle. What unfolded felt more like a scene from a heated soccer match than a quiet afternoon at the ballpark.
And well, if you’re going to be ejected, you might as well do it in style, and Baldelli absolutely delivered.

Rocco Baldelli was ejected from Saturday’s home game against the Giants after vehemently arguing a called strike during Carlos Correa’s at-bat in the sixth inning. Baldelli, visibly frustrated with the call, gave the home plate umpire, Adrian Johnson, a glaring attitude before being tossed. On his way off the field, he punctuated the moment by tossing his Twins cap in frustration.
Now, that’s an epic hat toss that perfectly captured his boiling point.

It was a boiling point moment for Baldelli on Saturday, marking the 16th ejection of his managerial career. His second of the season. The tension had been simmering all game, but it finally spilled over after a disputed call.
Tensions flared when Baldelli confronted the umpire after a questionable strike call on a pitch that appeared to be clearly outside the strike zone. The call sparked an animated exchange, with Baldelli offering an emphatic earful in defense of his player. Well, replays seem to support Baldelli’s frustration, showing the pitch well off the plate.

So again, incidents like this reignite the ongoing debate about the need for an automated strike zone in MLB, a move that could significantly reduce the influence of human error in critical moments. Till then, we can surely expect more such face-offs!
This wasn’t the first time Baldelli found himself at odds with the officials this season. Back in early April, he was ejected during a game against the Royals after fiercely defending Simeon Woods Richardson, who had been dinged for a controversial pitch-clock violation. That incident showed the Twins’ manager’s willingness to go to bat for his players. And Saturday’s ejection was another flash of that same fiery resolve.
Baldelli’s role in the Twins’ mixed-bag performance
Currently, the Twins have improved their season record to 20–20, reaching a .500 win percentage for the first time this year. They are now in fourth place in the AL Central, trailing the division-leading Tigers by six games. Moreover, the Twins are on a seven-game winning streak, including recent victories over the Giants and Orioles.
In their latest May 10 match, they edged the Giants 2–1, with Trevor Larnach hitting a two-run homer and Joe Ryan delivering a strong pitching performance.
Despite this recent success, the Twins have faced challenges earlier in the season, including injuries and inconsistent performances. Their home record stands at 14–6, while they have struggled on the road with a 6–14 record. Off the field, the team is experiencing a significant drop in attendance amid a poor start to the season, with fans showing discontent.

So, what can Baldelli do here?
His stand for the players might work wonders in keeping the clubhouse together.
For starters, Baldelli is known for his adaptive approach to lineup construction. In the 2024 season, he utilized 154 unique batting orders, rarely repeating the same lineup. This strategy aims to optimize matchups and provide opportunities for emerging players. Well, nothing much improved. They finished 4th in the division with an 82-80 record.

Now, the team is going on a similar route this season with the same .500 win percentage. While the Twins got the better of the Giants by 2-1 after Baldelli got ejected, it might not be enough hope for the future.
