The Philadelphia Phillies’ dream journey got a hit. While players often make mistakes when on the field, some cost heavily, like Harper’s. Bryce Harper generally becomes aggressive when on the bases, but little did he know it would backfire badly. During Game 2 against the Braves, his one mistake cost their series lead. While both teams were fighting their best to win, Harper’s one move turned the table in the Braves’ favor, and they took away the game.

The NLDS journey of the Phillies started with a grandeur. Harper’s homer brought them a glorious victory in Game 1, but soon things changed when the player made a wrong move in Game 2. If the Phillies’ DH hadn’t made the move, the game result could have been different. Even the manager of the team offered his views on this.

Rob Thomson’s views on Bryce Harper’s baserunning blunder

Game 2 started with a desperate mentality from both teams. But out of his aggressiveness, Harper made a wrong decision in the ninth inning. The incident unfolded, in the ninth innings, Nick Castellanos hit the ball, and it went deep right-center off Raisel Iglesias. Harper was on the first base, and he decided to score for his team. In this process, he didn’t look for the ball, and that was the blunder he did. For The Braves, Michael Harris made a leaping catch, and Austin Riley assisted him. When Harris caught the ball, Harper had rounded second base.

He tried hard to return, but with Riley at the right place at the right time, The Braves completed the double play. As per Elias Sports Bureau, this is the first game in the MLB postseason history to end in a double play with an outfielder involved.

The Phillies manager Rob Thomson offered his view on this entire incident. Though he answered wisely without mentioning anyone’s name, his answer shows Harper must not have done it. Thomson said, “Usually you don?t pass the base. You stay in front of it, make sure it?s not caught. But he thought the ball was clearly over his head, didn?t think he was going to catch it. And Harris made a heck of a play. Unbelievable.”?Further, he mentioned, pointing out Harper’s move, “he tried to get back, and he slipped, but usually you stay in front of the second base.

Growing up in a family where sports was a topic of daily discussion, baseball drew my interest the most. I admired the post-retirement journey of Alex Rodriguez and the rise of Shohei Ohtani and Elly De La Cruz to stardom in the current baseball generation. Forever enamored by Bryce Harper and the way his career is progressing, I love covering most East Coast teams. When not writing, you can always find me at the library, buried between the pages of a book. “There is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so,” from Shakespeare’s Hamlet is a favorite for me. When not surrounded by words, I’m usually in the battlefields of COD and Fortnite!
