Scherzer played a pivotal role during the Nationals’ World Series victory in the 2019 season. He has one of the most impressive win-loss records by a starting pitcher. Having built a Hall Of Fame-worthy record, he got bought by the Mets for a whopping $130 million. But Scherzer failed to live up to his hype in the first wildcard game.

The Padres demolished the Mets through a 7-1 margin victory. In an unusual performance, Scherzer gave up four home runs. Josh Bell, Trent Grisham, Jurickson Profar, and Manny Machado all smashed home runs off Scherzer. The treasured veteran pitcher simply looked on like a spectator, as his ineffective pitches sailed over.

Therefore, upon replacement, Scherzer had to walk back to the dugout to some booing from the disappointed crowd.

Scherzer’s performance in his own words

Speaking at a post-game interview after the loss, Scherzer said, “I wasn’t able to command that fastball the way I usually can. That’s my bread and butter to be able to set up everything else. When my fastball’s flat and then running, that’s usually when I get hit a lot. Obviously, tonight I got hit a lot.”
