Derek Jeter had his fair share of romantic relationships during his career with the Yankees. One of them was his three-year relationship with his ex-girlfriend, Minka Kelly. The couple started dating in 2008 and were first seen together at a Texas Longhorns football game.

The relationship bloomed and Jeter and Kelly were together for three years in what seemed like a serious relationship. Kelly was regularly seen supporting Jeter during games and important moments in his career at the time. But what may surprise you is that Kelly was not that big of a baseball fan before dating Jeter.

Minka Kelly knew nothing about baseball before dating Derek Jeter

In the HBO Sports documentary, Derek Jeter 3K, Minka Kelly, and Derek Jeter talked about her lack of knowledge of the sport. Both Jeter and Kelly found her lack of baseball knowledge quite funny. Jeter even cracked a joke about it while talking about it. Both Jeter and Kelly recalled funny incidents involving Kelly’s lack of baseball knowledge.

Minka Kelly: “When I met Derek, I didn’t know anything about baseball at all.”

Jeter: “She’s lying. She had a poster of me on her wall when she was in highschool. And she claims she didn’t know who I was or anything about the Yankees. No I’m just playing, she, she really didn’t know a thing about baseball.”

Minka Kelly: “I mean I didn’t know the difference between a run and a home run. I thought if you made a connection with the ball that was an automatic hit.”

Jeter: “So I’d you know come home, she’d be happy, say you got four hits. What are you talking about? What are you watching?”

This showed just how clueless Kelly was about baseball before she and Jeter got together. But as the relationship between the two progressed, she learned more and more about the sport. Jeter credits his father for helping Keely learn about the sport quicker.

Unfortunately, the couple’s relationship didn’t last, and they broke up in 2011. Neither Jeter nor Kelly confirmed the reason for the breakup. Derek Jeter met his now wife Hannah Davis in 2012 and the rest is history.

The Derek Jeter 3k documentary was made in celebration of Jeter reaching 3000 Hits. HBO Sports and MLB Productions teamed up and created this documentary to honor Jeter’s 3000 hits as a Yankee. The documentary was shot in the run-up to and shortly after Jeter got his 3000th hit. Derek Jeter is now happily married and has three kids with his wife.
