Alex Rodriguez and Madonna – rumors began circulating in 2008

2008 was a rough time for Rodriguez. His marriage with Cynthia Scurtis was on the rocks and rumors of him taking PEDs were rampant. Similarly, Madonna’s marriage to Guy Richie was going through an emotional turmoil. However, July of that year turned out to be the time that these two worlds collided. Rumors spread like wildfire that A-Rod was having a fling with Madonna. Reports of them meeting each other also began releasing.

However, there wasn’t anything concrete regarding these speculations. Yes, Rodriguez was seen attending Madonna’s evening to benefit Raising Malawi and UNICEF in February 2008 but that was before these rumors began circulating. Similarly, Madonna attended the Yankees’ game with her kids on June 22. However, what fueled the rumor fire were the apparent after-effects of this connection.

Affair of the “heart” and multiple divorces

Rodriguez and Scurtis had been married since 2002. They had two daughters – the younger was just four months old. However, when Scurtis became aware of A-Rod’s infidelity, she immediately flew to Paris. “The embarrassment over Madonna was the last straw. She flew to Paris to get out of town before everything blew up between them,” said a source to People.

Scurtis later filed for divorce in Miami, Florida, and cited extramarital affairs as the reason. But no names were listed in those documents. However one of her lawyers said that Rodriguez had “an affair of the heart” rather than a sexual affair with Madonna. Around the same time, another split took place.

Madonna and Guy Richie announced their divorce in October 2008. Madonna reportedly cited unreasonable behavior from Richie as the reason. Their relationship had been on the rocks due to their careers and schedules forcing them to stay apart for long periods. All of this fueled the fire and made people even more curious regarding the alleged affair between the Grammy Award winner and a multi-time MVP.

Rodriguez calls Madonna “a friend” and the pop icon denies their affair

Madonna was the first one to deny the alleged fling. First, she did it through her representative and later said so herself. “My husband and I are not planning on getting a divorce,” (Madonna said before the divorce) “I know Alex Rodriguez through Guy Oseary, who manages both of us…I am not romantically involved in any way with Alex Rodriguez. I have nothing to do with the state of his marriage or what spiritual path he may choose to study,” Madonna said. (via People) 

The spiritual path comment is important because one of the primary reasons for these speculations was A-Rod’s interest in Kabbalah. Madonna practiced this type of Jewish mysticism and it was reported to be a reason for Rodriguez’s divorce. Then in December, Rodriguez gave his own rebuttal on this topic.

Both of them were in Mexico City simultaneously – Madonna was performing and Rodriguez was attending a baseball event for children. Once again speculations grew. But this time Alex Rodriguez decided to put a stop to these talks. “We’re friends – that’s it,” A-Rod said. Calling the rumors of them buying an apartment together “ridiculous” the Yankees star vehemently denied the claims. However, almost 12 years later – Jennifer Lopez may have confirmed the rumors.

Jennifer Lopez’s Halloween dress and comments on Rodriguez’s past

Jennifer Lopez and Rodriguez were engaged in 2020 (though they split in 2021). During that time Lopez appeared on Radio Andy where they talked about her Halloween dress. To this, the star replied that she dressed as 80s-era Madonna and Rodriguez chose to be Bruce Springsteen. However, what she said next almost confirmed the rumors to be true.

When asked whether it was “odd” to be dressed as Madonna due to Rodriguez’s alleged history with her, Lopez said, “No, it was so long ago. It wasn’t weird at all.” That statement suddenly gave fans all the confirmation they needed. Still, neither Madonna nor Rodriguez have ever confirmed this relationship. 

However, it seems Rodriguez’s fandom for Madonna hasn’t ended. He was recently seen attending the Queen of Pop’s Miami show. While the two aren’t related anymore, the video of A-Rod watching Madonna did send a few fans down memory lane. Perhaps this mystery won’t ever get solved or maybe the curtains will fall someday.
