“When People Were Bullying Me, I Loved It…”- Hall of Famer David Ortiz Once Opened Up on Traveling Into Enemy Territory During Peak of Historic Yankees-Red Sox Rivalry

David Ortiz was a high-class entertainer during his playing days. Post-retirement, he turned into a broadcaster and baseball analyst. His analysis are equally entertaining. Digital sports network ‘The Post Game’ once caught up with the broadcaster for a fun interview.

David Ortiz, nicknamed ‘Big Papi’ is a retired baseball legend. He achieved sporting stardom, playing MLB with the Boston Red Sox for the major part of his career. Ortiz is a 10-time All-Star player and three-time World Series champion. He earlier played with the Minnesota Twins. Ortiz is an MLB Hall Of Fame inductee.

‘The Post Game’ caught up with Ortiz while he was busy promoting ‘Sheraton Hotels and Resorts’. So the sporting network asked Ortiz a few travel-related questions dating back from his playing days. The interviewer asked the baseball legend about his favorite city to stay in as a player. Ortiz gave an interesting reply. 

David Ortiz on the joy of venturing into enemy land 

David Ortiz played a significant role in the three World Series editions that he won with the Red Sox. He played in strong Red Sox line-ups featuring a wide range of match-winners when, at the same time, the New York Yankees had equally well-matched line-ups of their own. The Red Sox vs Yankees is one of the most famous and longest surviving rivalries in baseball.

The Red Sox and the Yankees are much more than mere opposition teams. They are sporting rivals, and their respective fan bases are like cut-throat enemies. Whenever the two teams play, the local fans start heckling. The prime targets are always the best players from the opposition, and Ortiz was one of them.

When the interviewer from ‘The Post Game’ asked Ortiz about his favorite MLB city to travel to, there was a surprise reply. He replied, “New York was one of them, to be honest with you. Chicago. And I got to also say LA.”

So the interviewer followed up and asked why Ortiz loved New York despite playing for Boston. He replied, “You know what, when people were bullying me, I loved it because it would get the best out of me, so, at some point, I think they were like, “OK, let’s stop bullying this guy. But I love the city. I’m from the Dominican Republic, so a big part of the population is from the Dominican, so I know a lot of people, I have friends from back there. It always was good to come to New York.” 

David Ortiz’s life beyond the baseball diamond  

Ortiz bid farewell to his playing tenure in 2016. He now works as a broadcaster and baseball analyst on Fox Sports. In addition, he also raises charity funds to donate towards social causes.
