Aaron Nola is primed to start Game 3 against the Dodgers on Wednesday night. The 32-year-old capped off his otherwise slumping season with an impressive outing on September 26, allowing just one run over eight innings against the Minnesota Twins. He also showed strong form in the Phillies’ intrasquad scrimmage at Citizens Bank Park, which was held last Wednesday.

He became the first Phillies pitcher to ever make a major league debut the season after his draft since Pat Combs in 1989. Now, in the present day, the 32-year-old holds a career 3.83 ERA. He’s widely regarded as one of the Phillies’ top pitchers.
However, this season he turned in the worst season of his 11-year career with a 6.01 ERA in 17 starts while missing significant time on the injured list with ankle and rib injuries.

Speaking on the opportunity to start in game 3 against the Dodgers, he said, “I’m going to go out and compete as best I can and throw the ball as best as I can and put the guys in position to win the baseball game. Obviously, we’re down 0-2, so going to LA, we have to get a win and take it inning by inning and pitch by pitch.”
Well, it’s a bit of a risky move from the Phillies’ end, given Nola’s 4.02 ERA in 53 2/3 playoff innings. But at the same time, he’s not new to this type of pressure-packed scenario.

A look at his professional career
Aaron Nola is the longest-tenured Phillie and certainly has a proven track record all these years. However, he went just 5-10 with a 6.01 ERA in 17 starts this season.
Largely because he missed three months from mid-May to mid-August due to a sprained right ankle and a stress fracture in one of his ribs. Including the postseason, all 295 of Nola’s big league appearances have come as a starter.
Excluding his struggles this season, it’s worth noting that Aaron Nola has typically navigated the opposing lineup pretty well the first time through. Opponents hit just .252 with a .693 OPS against Nola when facing him for the first time.

That OPS jumped to .797 the second time through and 1.005 the third time. That being said, Aaron Nola entered the postseason on a high note after saving arguably his best start of the year for his final start of the regular season.
Against the Minnesota Twins, he pitched a season-high eight innings on September 26. All while racking up a season-high nine strikeouts and allowing just one run off two hits. In 2024, Nola lost Game 3 of the division series against the New York Mets, allowing 4 runs over five innings. However, for Tuesday’s game, Nola knows what’s at stake, and he will certainly deliver his best.
