The Washington Nationals just did something very risky in baseball. Paul Toboni, who makes the team’s decisions, has chosen Blake Butera, who is 33 years old, to be their next manager. That’s right: Butera will be the youngest manager in the big leagues in more than 50 years. No one saw this coming.

What makes it even more interesting is how well it fits with Toboni’s plan. He built this group around young people and new ideas, and he just doubled down on that idea. A lot of people thought he would hire someone with experience to run the clubhouse. He chose to go younger instead. It’s not safe, it’s not normal, and it’s pure Toboni.

Blake Butera’s Early Life and Baseball Roots

Butera has real baseball experience. His father, Barry Sr., spent time in the Boston Red Sox system back in the late seventies and early eighties, while his brother, Barry Jr., went through the Houston Astros organization. Baseball is in the blood. Even though Butera didn’t play for long, he quickly figured out what he was really good at: helping people get better at what they do.

That’s what he’s been doing with Tampa Bay for years. When he took over the Hudson Valley Renegades in 2018, he was only 25 years old, making him the youngest manager in all of professional baseball. After that, he worked his way up through the Rays’ system, where he held coaching and development roles that changed how he sees the game.

One thing was clear from his .235/.342/.327 slash line: he wasn’t going to be swinging a bat in the future. He took off his cleats and went to the other side.

Blake Butera’s Coaching and Management Journey

Butera has a long history with baseball in Louisiana. He worked on his game at Boston College and then spent two seasons playing in the Appalachian and New York-Penn Leagues. But the real magic happened when he switched sides and became a manager. He made his name there by winning Manager of the Year with the Charleston RiverDogs in 2021 and 2022.
