Brice Matthews was born to Steve and Edrice Matthews – both originally from New Orleans and alumni of McDonogh 35 College Preparatory High School. Brice also has a sister named Blake.

Reportedly, his father, Steve, played college baseball at the University of Kansas and later became a coach at the Astros Urban Youth Academy in Houston, where Brice began playing baseball at the age of nine. “My dad and Coach Stelly played together in high school, so that’s kind of the connection of how I started going to the Youth Academy,” Brice Matthews recalled.

Both his parents attended the University of Oklahoma. His parents’ strong academic and athletic backgrounds, along with their early support, played a key role in shaping his development as a baseball player. Probably, the first taste of baseball for Matthews came from his father, as he connected the family to the diamond.

As per the Astros Youth Academy director Daryl Wade, since 2010, thousands of boys and girls have come through its doors to play baseball or softball. Inside the academy, there’s a wall with all their names listed, honoring their journey. But over the years, only 11 players from the academy have been drafted into MLB. And there, Brice Matthews made history as the first ever to be taken in the first round.
