This recent recall is more than just a way to add to the roster; it’s another chapter in a remarkable journey that has taken him back and forth between Syracuse and Queens all year long. Who is Luisangel Acuna? All to know about his parents, family, background, and more

Luisangel Acuna was born on March 12, 2002, in Caracas, Venezuela, and grew up in La Sabana. He hails from a family that not only loves baseball but has it running in their DNA. Luisangel is the younger brother of baseball phenom Ronald Acuna Jr., and they aren’t the only ones playing on the diamond. Bryan plays for the Twins, and Kenny is expected to sign with the Phillies when he becomes eligible. Their dad, Ronald Sr., also played in the minor leagues.

There are more branches on his family tree. Uncle Jose Escobar and cousins Alcides Escobar, Kelvim Escobar, Jose Campos, and Edwin Escobar have all made it to the majors, earning All-Star honors and playing major roles.

Yet, this legacy didn’t come without effort. Discipline was the family’s cornerstone. Ronald Sr., who carried the lessons of his own career missteps, instilled in his sons the belief that raw talent alone wouldn’t be enough. He emphasized hard work, training, and mindset, reminding them that “lifting weights” and maintaining the right attitude were just as important as natural ability. The Acunas didn’t just grow up playing baseball; they grew up working for it.

How has his baseball journey been? A look at Luisangel Acuna’s career before the big stage

Luisangel Acuna’s first chapter in MLB began in 2018 when the Braves’ international controversy messed up his contract and sent him back into the market. This turned out to be a good thing for the Rangers, who signed him with a $425,000 bonus. After that, he raced through the Rangers’ system, showing off his speed, bat, and glove work. He ended 2022 as a Fall League All-Star.

The Mets traded Max Scherzer to Texas for a promising young player. He started the year in Triple-A Syracuse, where he played second base, shortstop, and center field. Luisangel led the team in stolen bases and had enough bat to keep things interesting.

Then the moment came: on September 14, 2024, he got the call to the majors. He recorded his first MLB hit the same day and hit his first home run just days later, finishing the season with an impressive stat line of  .308/.325/.641 with three home runs and six RBIs in 14 games. In 2025, he made the Mets’ Opening Day roster and even won Rookie of the Month in April. Then he was sent back to Triple-A as part of the Mets’ strategic plan, where he can play more consistently.

And what about Ronald Acuna Jr.? He isn’t bashful about it: “Watching him play feels like watching myself play to be honest. … The only main difference is he’s on the infield.” Big bro chuckles and points out how their swings and instincts are the same. The only thing Luisangel doesn’t do is patrol the outfield.

It’s not merely a mentorship connection for them. It’s a healthy rivalry with love on top. Now that he will play for the majors, can he make the impact like Acuna Jr did?
