If no one was around, he would hurl the tennis balls against the porch steps and field them and do it over and over. That passion turned into performance, and he joined a top-tier club team, Hitters, when he was just eleven.

Then he made his way to the University of Michigan, and there he made an immediate impact. As a freshman, he was named to the Collegiate Baseball Freshman Team. Then, as a sophomore, he led the teams in hits and went on to earn the First Team All-Big Ten and even showed off his academic power with an Academic All-Big Ten.

Also, Voit started all 56 games at second base, and nobody else on the team can boast that. He slashed .346/.471/.668 with 14 home runs and 60 RBIs. And while he didn’t pitch this season due to injury, he had previously shown pretty strong ability on the mound, averaging a low 90s fastball and solid command.

Voit told The Michigan Daily. “(My dad) showed me (the routine). It was for when he was gone, I would do that. Morning, night, anytime of day, (I’d) wake up the neighbors.” That became his ritual and molded his instincts.

Meanwhile, his mom, Sharon, recalled how young Mitch would beg the coaches at summer camps to let him sub in with the older kids. “He would ask the coach, ‘Can I sub?’ and the coach would tell him, ‘No, you’re too young.’ He kept going for two weeks, and the coach still said, ‘You’re too young’ until the coach was finally like, ‘You’re in.’”
