

After a disappointing loss on Opening Day, the Detroit Tigers are making a comeback. Baseball fans are excited to see their favorite teams back in action as the 2023 season starts. This year is a little different from the rest – interesting trades in the off-season aside, MLB’s new rules and the pitch clock have taken some adjusting to. Nevertheless, teams are back in action and the Tigers just had a huge win over the Houston Astros.

Tigers center fielder Matt Vierling stole the show. Not only did he have four hits, but he also hit two home runs in the 11th inning. It was a rapid recovery for the Tigers in what was quite literally the 11th hour. Minute Maid Park was alive with the roaring crowds cheering for the Detroit team’s first win of the season.

When the Tigers’ official Twitter posted the news, fans erupted in cheers in the comments section. “First dub’s extra sweet,” read the caption.
Since the Astros are the reigning World Series champions, Detroit fans were especially ecstatic. After all, things seemed tense at the end, when Vierling swooped in. His play turned things around and his team won 7-6.

Vierling not only hit the homers but made a sprawling bases-loaded catch too. After a 0-3 start on Monday, it seemed like this was the inspiration other players needed to give their best as well.

A.J. Hinch, the Tigers’ manager, later commented, “They hung in there and kept fighting. It felt like we were one pitch away in a couple of different innings. It is never over until you get the final out. We had to play some extra outs tonight but had some productive plays.”

When the two teams faced each other in the 2022 season, the Astros defeated the Tigers 7-0 in the season series. Now the morale will be even higher for Detroit because they beat the reigning World Series champs!
