A viral video of a fan brawl from Game 2 of the ALCWS drew more attention than the game itself. The Boston Red Sox were more competitive during those 45 seconds of the altercation at Yankee Stadium than they ever were on the field. The video from the stands in the Bronx during Game 2 of the Wild Card bout between the New York Yankees and the Red Sox shows a fan in a black shirt attacking Boston fans.

On Wednesday, two Yankees fans captured a video captured on the upper deck, showing another Bleacher Creature in a black T-shirt charging towards a fan in a yellow Red Sox jersey. They started to throw punches aggressively. Another Red Sox fan, this one in a red jersey, initially appeared to be a peacemaker and tried to pull the Yankees fan off the one in yellow by grabbing their shirt.

However, he quickly abandoned his mission while another Red Sox fan got involved and punched back.

It gave the fan in yellow a chance to regroup and retaliate. As the alleged instigator was shoved to the ground and fell backwards into the stairs of the section, the initial target threw a few punches of his own.

Finally, the Red Sox fans pushed the attacker out of the area and towards the exit after they threw a few more punches. The New York Post shared the viral video of the brawl on X.

However, the fan in a black T-shirt did not leave before saying, “F— you!” and flipping them off. Then they donned a black Yankees cap and walked away.

As the video quickly gained traction, something surprising stands out.

No one from the stands chose to step in to break up the fight. Instead, attendees in the area cheered, laughed, ‘woo-hoo’-ed, and recorded the incident. Upper-deck sections during high-intensity postseason rivalry games often present visibility and response-time challenges for security personnel scattered throughout the massive ballpark. This is probably why we didn’t see any official intervention.

Reports on the incident or the viral video do not indicate exactly when the fight broke out or in what row. Neither does it confirm what triggered the brawl. However, it is clear that the wild punches were thrown somewhere during the game.

While this particular fan fight did not escalate further, fans at Yankee Stadium witnessed a violent brawl earlier in the season.

During a 4-11 loss to the Los Angeles Angels in April, a heated argument between fans turned into a physical altercation in seconds.

On the second deck down the left-field line, an Angels fan pushed a Yankees fan wearing an Aaron Judge jersey, and he fell onto the chair. Then, the guy in red started shoving the fallen fan’s head into the chair while trying to kick his face repeatedly. Scarily enough, he nearly stomped the Yankees fan’s face. Ultimately, other fans stepped in and broke up the fight.

Coming back to the present, the tense atmosphere was seen in the Legends Suite of the stadium as well.

Filmmaker Spike Lee came to watch the game at Yankee Stadium. Ahead of the game, a fan approached him for a selfie and asked him to say, “F— Palestine,” per the NY Post.

An angry Lee immediately informed security, and the fan was kicked out.

Now, we can’t help but wonder if this is what Pedro Martinez meant when he wanted the archrivals to have “enough reasons to hate each other.” Because the Yankees eliminated the Red Sox from the postseason for the second straight year with an alarming 18-2 score in two games.

Yankees rout Red Sox in Wild Card Series: A quick recap of Game 2

After Cam Schlittler’s 6.1 innings of scoreless brilliance in Game 1 helped the Yankees shut out the Red Sox 9-0, Max Fried and Sonny Gray faced off in Game 2.

It was a do-or-die game for the Boston Red Sox, and they failed to put up a fight.

The game was a close one till Sonny Gray was on the mound, pitching for the Boston Red Sox.

Gray kept the Yankees scoreless until the fourth inning, when Luis Garcia Jr.’s homer gave New York a 1-0 lead. In the next frame, Chad Tracy pulled Gray after the RHP gave up a leadoff single to Trent Grisham, and then another single to Ben Rice with two outs.

Tracy sent Erik Miller in his place, who promptly gave up an RBI single to Cody Bellinger.

“I think I’m the best pitcher in the American League, the third time through the order. I think that’s a fact. I would have liked to be trusted in that moment,” Gray reportedly said.

In his defense, Tracy explained that he opted for the bullpen because the Red Sox were trailing. He wanted to take an aggressive approach.

However, that plan backfired entirely as Garret Crochet and Garret Whitlock imploded in the sixth.

In that inning, George Lombard Jr. singled to score Spencer Jones, who stole third on a wild pitch. Crochet allowed consecutive singles to load the bases before Tracy pulled him.

Whitlock relieved Crochet but surrendered five more runs to the Yankees, including Bellinger’s three-run homer. Austin Wells’ RBI single in the next frame made it 9-2, cementing the Red Sox’s blowout loss.

Max Fried went 6 innings deep, struck out 6, and allowed one earned run on 3 hits. Willson Contreras’ and Nick Sogard’s solo homers are the only runs the Red Sox contributed in the series. Contreras’ sixth-inning solo shot ended a 26.2-inning scoring drought for the Red Sox in the postseason.

Before Wednesday, the Red Sox had not scored since the sixth inning of Game 2 of the 2025 Wild Card Series.

While the Red Sox’s 2026 campaign ended in disappointment, the Yankees have advanced to the ALDS. They will play the first two games against the Tampa Bay Rays in Florida. Yankee Stadium will host Games 3 and 4. If the series goes to Game 5, the Rays will again host their division rivals at Tropicana Field.
