“Would Sooner Chew It Than..” – Did You Know About Legendary George Steinbrenner’s Fear in the Yankees Clubhouse?

George Steinbrenner, the legendary ex-New York Yankees owner, is known for his discipline and temper. An air force veteran, Steinbrenner wanted military-like discipline in his players and employees. He was feared not by the players but by the General Managers also. Several times he fired and re-hired his general managers and employees. 

Steinbrenner’s legendary temper has been the headline of the news articles and chapters in the books of biographies on Yankees players. Derek Jeter has also dedicated a chapter in his autobiography to Steinbrenner where he talked about the temper of The Boss.

In his autobiography, The Life You Imagine: Life Lessons for Achieving Your Dreams, Derek Jeter shared insight into the nature of George Steinbrenner. He says that whenever Steinbrenner visited the ballpark, the players and the management immediately became attentive.

Derek Jeter says that the guards at the ballpark used to inform the others with a secret message when Steinbrenner visited the ballpark. The secret message was called ‘The Eagle has landed.’ Jeter says that upon his arrival, everyone stood straight and looked busy to avoid eye contact with him.

Jeter further talks of the discipline in the team due to the presence of Steinbrenner. He says, “If there’s a scrap of paper on the floor, employees would sooner chew it than let the Boss see it. If a player’s practice jersey is not tucked in, which I rarely see anyway, he tucks it in. Everything is neat, efficient, and professional, the staples of a winning organization.”

In his autobiography, Jeter has also written about the discipline, dedication, and leadership qualities of Steinbrenner. He also talked about his cordial relationship with Steinbrenner.

In his autobiography, Derek Jeter talks about the other side of Steinbrenner, which led to his team winning seven World Series and 11 American League pennants under his leadership. He says Steinbrenner aspires for success and expects everyone in his company to be as focused and dedicated as himself.

Jeter says about his relationship with The Boss, “You could tell when he was around because certain people got panicky. I’m not one of them. The thing about Mr. Steinbrenner is he knows that I have respect for him, but I’m not intimidated. I think he understands that. I think that’s why we have a good relationship.”

George Steinbrenner is a legend among the Yankees fans. Apart from his temper, he is also known for his vision and leadership of the Yankees in one of their best periods.
