There’s no one quite like The Captain. Derek Jeter has been retired for almost a decade now. New York Yankees fans still miss his presence on the diamond, even though a lot of talented players have joined since then. Over the years, fans have believed a lot of ballplayers to be capable of carrying Jeter’s legacy – new team captain Aaron Judge, and shortstop Anthony Volpe, to name a few. One player, however, that many forget is Xander Bogaerts.

The 30-year-old was lucky enough to play at the same time as his idol. Although, admittedly, he played for the enemy. While Jeter captained the Yankees, Bogaerts played for the Boston Red Sox. Yet, even today, Xander wears jersey number 2 in the former Bronx Bomber’s honor. Bogaerts has always admired Jeter and wanted to follow in his footsteps. And it seems like he’s still set on that goal.

MLB analyst Ryan M. Spaeder revealed some interesting statistics about Jeter as well as Boagerts. The Hall of Famer managed to accomplish a lot of amazing feats in his 20-season career. Bogaerts now plays for the San Diego Padres but has kept up a good performance. And while a ballplayer can set any number of records with new players catching up every day, every player is unique in what they bring to the field.

Yet, according to Spaeder’s stats, Bogaerts is on his way to slowly gaining on Jeter. The Padres shortstop set a 2023 record for reaching base in each of his first 30 games this season. He seemed unstoppable, but his streak unfortunately ended on Wednesday.
