After a Blue Jays loss and a Yankees win on September 24, the two clubs found themselves tied atop the division standings. After blowing its lead for the first time after July 3, Toronto feels frustrated. That frustration boiled over into accusations, and probably some of that got reflected by that George Springer during Tuesday’s game against the Boston Red Sox.

That discussion resurfaced during the Yankees-White Sox match when the WFAN host Dave Sims discussed the incident. “It went over the bag, and he didn’t get a call. It went over the front corner of the bag, and he didn’t get the call. Yeah, and that’s when he…got a little angry,” the hosts referred to what happened during the Jays and Red Sox match. “Our friends at Jomboy, they uh, Jimmy did a little lip reading and he could see Springer say, ‘If you want to give the title to New York, just give it to him,’ recalled Sims.

His fellow commentator, Suzyn Waldman, continued with what Dave Sims said, “Just let me know. Yeah. You know, here’s what that means to me is that Toronto’s feeling the pressure.” And Sims then funnily dismissed the idea of a pro-Yankees conspiracy. “Whoever wrote that script, probably a friend of Stephen King. Yeah, let’s let the Yankees go 20-31 and really have to dig themselves out of a hole the last month.”

In the second inning of a 1-0 game against Boston, Toronto’s $150 million star, George Springer, smashed a Lucas Giolito changeup down the line, with the bases loaded and two outs. But umpire Scott Barry called it a foul, and on the very next pitch, Springer struck out on a pitch that appeared to be well outside. Springer’s frustration was understandable, but his private comments in the dugout soon became viral, thanks to the lip-reading skills of Jomboy Media.

Jomboy transcribed Springer’s words: “If they want New York to win, just tell me and give it to them already. How do you miss that? It is right in front of him.”

And at the end, someone from YES Network TV provided the final nail in the coffin, placing the blame squarely on the Blue Jays’ recent performance. “The whole division was in Toronto’s hand. So, you know, that was kind of a weird comment. All they got to do is win some games, and they will do it,” reported Talkin’ Yanks’ X account.

But still, to understand the outburst, we need to trace the calls that fed the fury.

Why Springer blew up

It began in Kansas City, where outfielder Nathan Lukes was robbed of a catch by a bizarre fan interference ruling after review. Crew chief Laz Diaz announced that while there was interference, the ball “would have been a home run anyway.” Just days later, another call left the Blue Jays’ broadcast team speechless when Outfielder Daulton Varsho made a spectacular diving catch, and the replay room overturned the call. A furious Buck Martinez called the decision “terrible, absolutely terrible” on air.

These events created a “Toronto vs. Everyone” mentality.

In the meantime, the Yankees surged and made themselves out of a massive hole after a disastrous mid-season slump, where they went on a 20-31 stretch. Since September 4, they have posted a 14-6 record. Conversely, the Blue Jays are just 4-6 in their last ten games and have lost six of their last eight contests.

And the Blue Jays’ slump is not purely about bad replays or tough luck. Injuries to players like Bo Bichette and Chris Bassitt affected the team. All-Star shortstop Bichette was hitting .311 and leading the major leagues in both hits (181) and doubles (44). And in his absence, the Blue Jays’ run production has dropped from 5.01 runs per game to just 3.63.

Now, with four games remaining, the path to the AL East title is clear for both teams. Win at least one extra game than the other. And this season, in the AL, we have seen similar drama.  The Tigers just witnessed a colossal 15.5-game lead in the AL Central evaporate entirely against their rival, the Guardians. So, what do you speculate to happen between the Yanks and the Jays?
