The Buffalo Bills have just lost a few fans in New York. Apparently, the Yankees, fresh off eliminating the Red Sox, are about to play the Blue Jays for the American League Division Series. It’s only natural to expect that the ones who live in New York State will support the Yankees. However, that’s not the case this time. They made their opinions known on Friday morning and invited some backlash in the process.

The Buffalo Bills, who are 4-0 heading into their Week 5 showdown, are publicly rooting for the Toronto Blue Jays in the ALDS. From their official X handle, they shared a post cheering for the Blue Jays with the caption, “Good luck to our friends up North.”

It immediately drew sharp backlash from New Yorkers. Well, the Blue Jays were able to secure a bye through the wild-card round. They finished atop the AL East Division, which meant they could sit back and wait until the winner of a wild-card series comes to Toronto to face them in the best-of-five.

One of the considerable reasons why the Buffalo Bills are cheering for the Blue Jays is that the Jays’ Triple-A affiliate is located in Buffalo. Also, if it makes any sense, Buffalo, in New York State, is apparently much closer to Toronto than it is to New York City.

Still, regardless of the intentions, the post annoyed plenty of Yankees fans. Largely because the Bills are considered a New York team. While this debate settles, the five-game series between the Blue Jays and Yankees is set to kick off this Saturday.

The first two games will be held at Rogers Centre, while Game 3 — and a potential Game 4 — will be played at Yankee Stadium. With big games on the line for the Yankees, the Buffalo Bills are facing some criticism for their actions.

Fans erupt in fury after the Bills cheer for the Blue Jays instead of the Yankees

Despite playing their home games in New York, the Bills are not pulling for the Yankees. And it was only a matter of time before the Bronx Nation got offended by the Buffalo Bills’ social media post rooting for the Blue Jays.

Yankees fans saw the Bills’ post as undermining the unity of New York-based teams. One fan expressed what many collectively felt:“I have never felt such betrayal.” It’s hard to tell on the Bills’ behalf, but their support for the Blue Jays was partly due to their connection with the Jays’ Triple-A affiliate, the Buffalo Bisons.

Similarly, another fan frustratingly noted, “Don’t worry, Yankees fans. This time next week they’ll be posting “Good luck in the ALCS, Yankees,” to which we tell them to go f—k themselves.” Apparently, Bronx faithful are severely offended by the Bills’ post. However, let’s not forget what happened last year in the postseason.

Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen treated his fellow quarterbacks last year by taking them to Game 4 of the World Series between the Dodgers and the Yankees. While he didn’t directly say that he’s a Yankees fan, he did admit that he will root for anyone “who’s playing the Dodgers.”

Still, Bill’s loyalty towards New York-based teams was questioned this time. “Isn’t Buffalo in NY? Shouldn’t they be wishing luck to the Yankees?” Another fan quipped. In contrast with what happened this time, last year, Allen himself said he wants to support the “local teams” in New York. And also that he’s rooting for the Yankees to go capture their 28th World Series title. Now that the Bills are rooting for a Canadian team and not a New York team, the fans have seemingly turned against them entirely. “Yeah, don’t call yourself a New York team again,” another fan noted.

Rooting for the Blue Jays felt like a betrayal of the shared fan community of the Bills and Yankees: “W—, you call yourselves the only NY team and then do this shit? Love the Bills but whoever runs this account can get bent.” While Buffalo is closer to Toronto than NYC, many New Yorkers still see Buffalo as part of New York State. So, it was a bit tough for the fans to accept how the Bills’ X account called the Blue Jays their “friends” while cheering for them ahead of the intense ALDS game.
