Another day, and another dominant start for the New York Yankees this season. All thanks to the entire team’s impressive performance that continued Sunday afternoon as well. While Aaron Judge and Co. led the team to a 12-2 win over the Athletics in Sacramento, things weren’t the same for the Athletics. It wasn’t what a former New York Yankees star was hoping for, nor was it any sort of retaliation game for the Yankees. Last year, the former Yankee took a dig at his Yankees teammates. Now that statement has resurfaced, and fans are lambasting the former star after the Athletics conceded a thumping defeat against the Yankees. Guessed the name yet?

We are talking about Luis Severino, who used to play for the New York Yankees. But soon after becoming a free agent, he was the first to join the Oakland Athletics in Sacramento, with the Athletics agreeing on a three-year, $67 million deal on December 6, 2024. It was the first time Luis Severino started in his career against the Yankees, the team with which he spent his eight Major League seasons. Severino went 1-2-3 in the first inning, striking out Aaron Judge using an 84.7 mph sweeper, but it was in the second inning where things took a drastic turn.

He started with a leadoff double by the Yankees’ Paul Goldschmidt, followed by facing five batters, with his first out, and ending up with five runs. While Severino opens up about the challenges faced while pitching, mentioning, “It’s tough to pitch here,” the quote of his from last year soon went viral, which read: “You only have two good hitters.

As expected, the New York Yankees fans didn’t stop hitting it back at him at the right time. Someone who called out his former teammates a year back for not having more than two good hitters now faces the wrath of fans. Not to forget that the Yankees’ offensive prowess was enough to crush Luis Severino, which painted a clear picture that the showdown was not just a game; rather, it was a statement.

Well, let’s have a look at how fans shared their angry reactions over the incident.

Former Yankees star’s old statement sparks fury among the fans

As the old comments resurface across social media, fans brutally roast the former Yankees star and now-Athletics ace. One of them commented, “Lmaooo fried sevy,” pointing to Luis Severino and how he’s been hit by the Yankees’ hitters. In Sunday’s 12-2 loss to the New York Yankees, Severino had his shortest outing of the season. While he stepped on the mound with expectations weighing heavily on his shoulders, the Yankees’ batters dismantled his defense, scoring eight runs off him across the four innings he pitched.

Did Luis Severino's past comments come back to haunt him, or was it just a bad day?

12 hitters, you mean… Is what I would respond and say in that chat.” That’s a direct dig at Luis Severino, as now, everyone in the Yankees’ lineup has been bashing him all over the ground. Be it Paul Goldschmidt, Ben Rice, Anthony Volpe, Aaron Judge, or Austin Wells, everyone showed their true character in front of the 12,224 crowd at the Sutter Health Park.

Then came more criticism: “You are the king of living in the past. What a sad way to walk through life.” It seems the fan delivered a scathing attack on Severino, highlighting that the Yankees are not what he thought they were earlier; rather, they are good to go this season. And it’s true—the Yankees currently stand atop the AL East with 23-17.

Agreeing with the previous comment, another user on X wrote, “I’m not. All that talk just to give up 5 runs in 2 innings.” For Severino, the game was a moment to prove his worth in the backdrop of his past achievements, but unfortunately, that didn’t go the way he expected. The final comment read, “This didn’t age too well 🤷🏿‍♂️🤷🏿‍♂️🤷🏿‍♂️.” Merely within a year of his dig, he seems to have gotten a befitting reply from his former teammates. Just as we always say—a tit-for-tat situation.
