The 2025 Yankees saw their season cut short by a team that had them figured out from the start. The legendary pinstripes have claimed a grand total of only one World Series title in the last 24 seasons, and none since 2009. Okay, fine, if we’re talking about New York teams, even the Mets haven’t won it all since 1986, or the Knicks since 1973, or the Jets since January of 1969. But you see, the Yankees are flat-out disappointed at the moment.

That being said, a viral tweet has been making the rounds. It’s saying exactly what Yankees fans want to hear right now. However, it’s fabricated. The post falsely claims Joe Torre, the Yankees’ longtime living legend, said something blunt (but he never did).
The post, shared by @RocknRollPastor – The Rev—David Nelson, claims that Joe Torre said, “I’ll be blunt—the Yankees have forgotten what it means to earn greatness. Wearing the pinstripes doesn’t guarantee a World Series anymore. Until they play with hunger, not entitlement, they’ll keep falling short.”

That’s actually not true; Torre never said that. It’s a fabricated statement. What did happen, though? The Athletics’ Ian O’ Conner had a word with Joe Torre recently. While speaking with Conner, Torre said, referring to the Yankees, “When you sign up for it, you know the expectations.” The expectation is to aim for the World Series every season.

They played some of their best baseball down the stretch, winning eight straight games and matching last year’s 94-win mark as they chased a second consecutive AL East title. However, it’s now time to make peace with the fact that the Blue Jays were simply a better team.
The Blue Jays secured the division crown via the head-to-head tiebreaker, pushing New York into the Wild Card Series and a tough early October battle. At the end, the Yankees could only watch the Blue Jays celebrate their ALCS spot at their home. “You don’t like seeing somebody celebrate on your field.” Aaron Judge admitted after the meltdown. But while many blame Aaron Boone for the season’s failure, it’s still a grey area.
Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez defend the Yankees manager from the season’s failure blame
Aaron Boone has been taking all the heat for the Yankees’ slump. Apparently, the Yankees nation is united in the fact that it’s Boone and the front office who should be blamed for the season’s failure.
However, the ones who have had longtime ties with the organization, Derek Jeter and A-Rod, completely disagree. “I’m not saying that from any inside knowledge. But I’m pretty sure Aaron’s not the one that’s calling every move,” Derek Jeter said while reflecting on the Yankees’ season.
Even Clint Frazier, a former Yankees outfielder, shared some insights about this in his podcast around two monhs ago. He stated that throughout his stint with the Yankees, whenever Boone would decide his own lineup, the analytics team would produce theirs. Ultimately, the day’s official order was never solely decided by Boone.

It’s still a grey area, though. Why? That’s because Andy Martino, a longtime New York insider, holds an opposing view. According to him, Jeter and A-Rod are “spreading falsehoods” about the whole Boone thing.

Honestly, it’ll probably always be a grey area until this debate is settled. But in contrast to Martino’s opinion, even Alex Rodriguez believes Boone isn’t the one to blame. From a personal view, he shared that the Yankees’ current roster construction is the worst he’s ever seen, and that’s the main issue for their continued struggles.
Yet, Boone has never let any opportunity go to vain when it comes to praising his roster. Sure, they do have star-studded and all-star names, but at the end, they fell short.
