In 2024, the Yankees made it to the World Series. Even though they lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers, reaching the finals was huge for a team that hadn’t participated in a Fall Classic since 2009. There is still doubt on the Yankees’ roster though; making a few offensive upgrades would help them. After losing the trophy and probably their best player, the pinstripes are not letting the past stop them.

Despite Soto’s choice to sign with the New York Mets, the organization is making every effort to make this offseason one to remember. The Yankees acquired Devin Williams in a trade on Friday after recently acquiring Max Fried. Devin Williams will help the bullpen continue to become better. After the Williams trade, Brian Cashman hinted that New York might not be done making moves either.

Brian Cashman hints more players may join his crew
On Friday, there was a virtual press conference held with Brain Cashman to announce the deal for Devin Williams. However, Cashman’s fidgety behavior caught everyone’s eye. He later explained why he was constantly looking down during the conference. The general manager said, “As you see – my phone – I keep looking down, because I keep getting connection of texts back and forth with other opportunities that may exist in the marketplace.” So, now it’s clear that the Yanks are not done yet; they are planning on more signings or even trades.

“The job isn’t finished here,” Cashman said. “We constantly are having to find ways to, at least in our minds, think we’re getting better one way or another…Now is time to strike. It’s the winter time with the inventory that’s available either in trade or free agency. Eventually, that inventory is going to get a lot smaller,” he added. The Yanks now have one of the best closers and one of the best starters, Max Fried, with them. Now, who could the crew add to add more value? Maybe it’s Alex Bregman or Cody Bellinger, both of whom are still on the market and are yet to choose a team they can call their own.

The Yankees could sign Cody Bellinger
The Cubs are turning out to be pro traders. They recently signed Kyle Tucker from the Astros by giving up three of their own and are now thinking of letting go of Cody Bellinger. Bellinger, who chose to enter into the second year of a three-year contract this winter, seems to be the main target of the Chicago Cubs’ offseason plans. The American baseball outfielder had a strong season the previous year, but following his impressive 2023 campaign, his output significantly decreased.

One hiccup in this trade would be that Bellinger is due $52.5 million over the next two years, which is a little pricey for Chicago’s tastes. So, that leaves teams who can actually afford him, one of them being the New York Yankees, who seem to be the most serious of the alleged suitors for Bellinger. The two-time All-Star has a little more defensive flexibility than Soto, but he’s not nearly as good offensively.

On paper, Bellinger’s replacement of Juan Soto in the left-handed outfield position makes perfect sense. However, the former MVP is not all perfect; he has had some long-standing injury issues throughout his career. Given that he is 29, the Arizona native should have plenty of energy left though. Bellinger would definitely enjoy the Yankee Stadium; after all, it is a fantastic park to hit in.
