For New York Mets fans, September ended painfully. But October may feel different in Queens. With their crosstown rival, the Yankees, and division rival, the Philadelphia Phillies, out of the playoffs, Metsies have things to celebrate. And for Cleveland Cavaliers star Donovan Mitchell, it was a perfect opportunity to troll his good friend from the New York Knicks.

The Yankees were completely outdueled 3-1 in a best-of-five division series against the Toronto Blue Jays just one day before the Phillies lost their division series against the Dodgers after an unexpected fielding error in extra innings. With the popular fan account, ‘MetsMuse’ X post, “PHILLIES AND YANKEES ELIMINATED!” NYM Nation was delighted to its core. And then, Donovan Mitchell entered the chat.
Mitchell reposted the tweet, tagging Knicks forward Josh Hart directly with a savage caption. “Can sleep better now😂😂”. A perfect jab from a die-hard Mets fan (Mitchell) to a loud and proud Yankees supporter (Hart).

After starting their season spectacularly with a 45-24 record, the best baseball record around that time, and a star-studded lineup with a massive $340 million payroll, they finished their second half of the season with a miserable 38-55 record, suffering multiple seven-game losing streaks.
Despite this, they still had their chance to qualify if they won their last game of the season, as the Reds, who later qualified and held the tiebreaker, eventually lost their final game against the Brewers. But in a must-win game against the Miami Marlins, the NYM were shut out 4-0, and that officially ended their season.

The history of the Hart-Mitchell baseball rivalry is filled with hilarious moments.
During a 2025 Subway Series game, Hart tweeted, “Just so yall know…its a Yankee city,” while his team was losing badly. Mitchell instantly replied back, “Saying this down 6 is funny 😂 #LFGM”. Later, as the Mets were collapsing, Hart returned the favor. He tagged Mitchell in a post asking, “Yo @spidadmitchell this what yall envisioned?”
They were mates in the 2017 NBA Draft and have never been shy about their baseball rivalry. Hart’s great-uncle, Elston Howard, was the first African-American player in Yankees history. And Mitchell’s Mets fandom, too, is just as deep.
He grew up in the organization while his father, Donovan Mitchell Sr., worked as a coach and now serves as a team executive.
Now, in MLB world, the Toronto Blue Jays from the AL and the Los Angeles Dodgers from the NL have already gotten their tickets to the League Championship Series. Four other teams are currently battling for their spots to play against these two teams in their respective league.
In the AL, the Detroit Tigers forced a winner-take-all Game 5 against the Seattle Mariners. And in the NL, the Chicago Cubs came back from a 2-0 deficit against the Milwaukee Brewers, who had the NL’s best record and will play their Game 5 on Saturday night in Milwaukee.

This year’s playoffs have everything from drama, upsets, to heartbreak. And while fans of the Yankees and Phillies try to figure out what went wrong, the rest of the league moves on.
And somewhere in between, Donovan Mitchell is probably smiling, waiting for his next chance to remind Josh Hart who had the last laugh.
