On July 22nd, 2025, ESPN’s Buster Olney dropped a bombshell on the baseball world. What he did was share an X update that stated how a certain veteran pitcher could be among the star players likely to be traded before the MLB trade deadline ends in a day. And now? A recent X update has confirmed this. So it’s no surprise that the Yankees and the Red Sox seem to rank among the top suitors for the very skilled, very accomplished right-hander Charlie Morton.

Now, Morton has been quite the journeyman throughout his 17-year MLB career. He has been consistently finding roles with contending teams due to his long-standing expertise and postseason experience, so if he is to be traded, it’s probably something he’ll take in stride. Moerton has had stints with the Atlanta Braves (2008 and again from 2021 to 2024), the Pittsburgh Pirates (2009 to 2015), the Houston Astros (2017 to 2018), and now the Baltimore Orioles. In the Orioles, he’s currently pitching under a one-year, $15 million deal he signed during the previous offseason. Also, keep in mind that the man has already been a World Series Champion in 2017 and 2021, as well as an All-Star in 2018 and 2019. Of course, he’s going to be on both franchises’ radars.

Back to the present, MLB insider Gordo has revealed on X that: “The Red Sox, Mets, Yankees, Astros, Padres, and Rays are among the suitors for Charlie Morton, according to @JonHeyman.” Remember a few days ago, when Buster Olney also said that it seems very likely that Morton (2.91 ERA last 12 appearances) will be traded within a relatively thin starting pitching market? He also said that a lot of teams are looking for help, mainly the Padres, Yankees, maybe the Mets or Astros; a number of which have expressed interest. In the past, Morton has had a preference to pitch for a team closer to the East Coast and his FL home, but he doesn’t control that. O’s GM Mike Elias does. While reporting this, one team they missed was the Red Sox after the Orioles showed interest in trading him

Now, despite his age, Morton continues to be a workhorse in the rotation. In the 2025 season, through 20 appearances and 15 starts, he compiled a 5-7 record along with 92 strikeouts across 96.2 innings pitched. However, he has performed inconsistently, which reflects in his 5.58 ERA and a WHIP over 1.40. While no longer the frontline starter he once was, Morton’s leadership and ability to eat innings remain valuable. And that’s not all. He is also a two-time World Series champion and throughout his playoff career has tallied a 7-5 record, with 92 strikeouts and a 3.60 ERA.

Could the Red Sox be signing Charlie Morton in a last-minute trade?

Morton is not the hottest name out there when it comes to trade targets or roster additions. He doesn’t generate the same buzz as some younger, high-velocity arms or big-name aces. But flashiness does not always win championships. The teams built for October know the value of experience and stability. As the hot days of summer approach and the grind of the season intensifies, battle-tested veterans like Morton could be the under-the-radar move that makes all the difference.

Morton brings postseason pedigree, clubhouse leadership, and the ability to keep his team in games. Even if his stuff isn’t as electric as it once was. For a club eyeing a deep playoff push, plugging someone like him into the back end of the rotation or using him in a swingman role could provide the steadying presence needed to transform a postseason contender into a legitimate pennant threat.

What’s your perspective on:

Is Charlie Morton the missing piece for the Yankees or Red Sox to dominate October?

Have an interesting take?

Morton is also on a one-year, $15 million deal, making him a logical trade candidate as the struggling Orioles look to sell at the deadline. Even if it means a division rival gains from Morton’s presence, the Orioles would be wise to capitalize on any interest and recoup value for a veteran on an expiring contract. His postseason experience and ability to eat innings could attract playoff hopefuls, and moving him would be a smart, forward-thinking move for Baltimore’s front office.
