The New York Yankees haven’t won a World Series since 2009, and frankly, their 2025 postseason dreams are hanging by a thread. Want to guess what their biggest problem is? Third base has become a black hole that’s swallowing their championship aspirations whole. Enter Eugenio Suarez—the one player who could single-handedly fix their defensive nightmare and reignite their playoff hopes.
Here’s where things get messy, though. Despite Suarez being their most obvious solution, the Yankees are playing hard to get in trade negotiations with Arizona. Well, you know how these front office chess matches go—nobody wants to blink first. According to Jon Heyman, there’s a significant gap in talks between the two clubs, even though the Yankees should match up perfectly with Arizona’s needs for pitching and catching prospects.
The desperation is real, folks. General manager Brian Cashman recently admitted the team was “going to town” to find upgrades at third base, and honestly, can you blame him? When Oswald Peraza is hitting .147 over 69 games at the hot corner, you’re not just looking for an upgrade—you’re looking for a miracle. The Yankees’ third base situation has been their Achilles’ heel all season, turning routine plays into adventures and costing them crucial games.

Suarez has to be easily the Yankees’ top 3B choice but hearing there’s a gap in talks at moment. Yanks should match up well with AZ with NYY’s pitching and catching prospects. But Mariners, Cubs, Reds, many others in.

Tbh, it makes sense that other teams are circling like vultures. The Mariners, Cubs, and Reds have all jumped into the Suarez sweepstakes while the Yankees hesitate. Arizona’s slugger has obliterated 55 home runs with 137 RBIs in his last 161 games, putting him on pace to become the first player traded during a 50-homer season since Mark McGwire in 1996. If the Yankees don’t act fast, their bounce-back season could become another disappointment in franchise history.
Yankees Face Clubhouse Drama Risk in Third Base Hunt
But wait—there’s a plot twist brewing in the Bronx that nobody saw coming. The Yankees’ quest for Eugenio Suarez has hit enough roadblocks that they’re now considering a potentially explosive backup plan that could either save their season or blow it up entirely. With the trade deadline looming next week, The Athletic’s Jim Bowden has thrown out a fascinating alternative: trading prospect Jasson Dominguez to Kansas City for third baseman Maikel Garcia.

Garcia brings legitimate talent to the table, and Bowden makes an interesting case that should have Yankees fans both excited and terrified. “If the Yankees can’t land Eugenio Suárez from the Diamondbacks, then Garcia would be a solid pivot. The first-time All-Star is slashing .291/.345/.440 with 26 doubles, eight home runs, and 19 stolen bases (in 28 attempts; he’s been caught stealing nine times, which leads the majors). Defensively, he ranks in the 89th percentile in outs above average (range) and in the 78th percentile in arm strength, according to Statcast. Garcia, 25, is under team control through the 2029 season,” wrote Bowden. Those numbers would represent a massive upgrade over their current third base disaster.

What’s your perspective on:
Are the Yankees' playoff dreams doomed if they don't snag Eugenio Suarez before the deadline?
Have an interesting take?
Here’s where things get messy, though—Garcia and Jazz Chisholm Jr. have feuded before, and nobody knows if their beef was real or just competitive fire. Do the Yankees want to find out if these two can coexist in the same clubhouse? The last thing this team needs is locker room drama derailing their playoff push when chemistry already feels fragile.

The reluctance to trade away Dominguez makes this deal even more complicated than it needs to be. The switch-hitting prospect has finally developed into that star they’ve dreamed about for years, and giving him up for a player with potential clubhouse baggage screams unnecessary risk.
