The infamous Yankees’ slump dragged on Friday night, where a tense bullpen battle against the Houston Astros slipped away in the 10th inning for a 5-3 loss. The club has lost six of its last seven games and fell to 3-8 in extra innings this season. Going 19-30 since June 13, the heat is turning up on manager Aaron Boone. He almost always shoulders the blame after the Yankees’ close losses. Recently, even Lucas Babits-Feinerman of Yanks Go Yard urged the Yankees to move on from Boone following this season.

It’s the base-running miscues and mental errors on defense that triggered him massively. “Often it seems like Boone not only makes the wrong decision but also the worst possible decision for the situation,” he wrote.

This was before the Yankees’ Friday night loss. It was Carlos Correa’s tie-breaking single through a drawn-in infield off the Yankees’ struggling reliever Devin Williams. Just like that, the Astros outlasted the Bombers in the 10th inning. Ultimately, the calls grew louder for the team to part ways with their longtime skipper.

However, Yankees’ announcer Michael Kay sees the entire thing differently. “I’m not anti-Boone the way most are. I think that Aaron Boone is managing the way the organization wants him to manage. Those are the rules of engagement. This is his eighth year; he always manages this way, and they just gave him a two-year contract extension at the beginning of the year.” It was back in February this year when the Yankees agreed to extend Boone’s contract through the 2027 season. But then again, the Yankees were doing just fine that time.

Kay further added, “So if he was as bad as we’re all making him ought to be, why would they throw good money after bad? This would be the last year of his deal. I think he’s doing exactly what they want him to do, which is to treat the players with kid gloves…. We don’t know what goes on behind the scenes.” According to Kay, Boone is not going rogue or mismanaging the Yankees on his own terms; in fact, it’s how the Yankees want him to.

However, if the club misses the postseason this year, it’s highly likely that Boone will finally be fired. But then, if not Boone, who else?

Former legend Alex Rodriguez as a Yankees manager?

Nearly 2 decades ago, the Yankees decided to task A-Rod with replacing Aaron Boone as a player. The decision paid off with a World Series title. According to the Yankees’ nation, history could repeat itself if Alex Rodriguez steps in as a manager.

What’s your perspective on:

Is Aaron Boone the real problem, or is the Yankees' front office to blame for the slump?

Have an interesting take?

However, let’s consider certain things first, shall we?

After consecutive losses, errors, and poor management, the calls grew louder than ever on X that the front office should bring in Rodriguez to replace Boone. Sure, no doubt that the former legend knows his way and is one of the most recognizable figures in the league.

First of all, there are no signs as of late that the Yankees are considering firing Boone mid-season. If only the team misses the postseason, then there could be a chance. If the managerial role opens up for Rodriguez, then let’s not forget that he has neither coached nor managed any club in the past.

Boone was inexperienced, too, but GM Brian Cashman has probably learned his lesson and won’t repeat his mistake. Plus, on Rodriguez’s end, there is already a lot going on. His TV work with FOX, paired with his being the alternate owner of the Minnesota Timberwolves, leaves him with no time.

Sure, the Yankees nation is boiling right now and needs a new face in the dugout, but it doesn’t seem like A-Rod will be able to fit right.
