9 Years After Derek Jeter Ended a Yankees Era, Iconic Bronx Trio Sees Historic Record Broken by Legendary NHL Trinity

The spirit of competition is at its peak. The New York Yankees had long dominated the sports scene, thanks to their formidable trio of Derek Jeter, Jorge Posada, and Mariano Rivera. As their endeavor progressed, they slowly became one of the scariest trios to face. However, after almost a decade, a new era is emerging. The difference is that this time it has shifted to the NHL. The current Pittsburgh Penguins and Chicago Blackhawks game witnessed the start of this new ‘trio’ era.

The game was not in the favor of the Penguins. Though they faced a 2-4 defeat against the Blackhawks, the former team caught the spotlight. The PPG Paints Arena witnessed a milestone that had been untouched for almost 12 years.

The Pittsburgh Penguins Achieved a Legendary Record Despite Defeat

On Tuesday, the famous NHL Core surpassed an iconic milestone of the New York Yankees’ legendary trio. Though the game defeat made their day a bit dim, Penguins’ Kris Letang, Sidney Crosby, and Evgeni Malkin appeared for their 18th season together which marks as “the longest tenured trio in NHL, MLB, NFL and NBA history.

Jeter, Posada, and Rivera, the part of the Core Four, which also featured Andy Pettitte, boast the 17 years of of togetherness from 1995 to 2011, winning five World Series. However, it has now been surpassed by an NHL trio, that delivered championships, capturing Stanley Cup titles in 2009, 2016 and 2017.

Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan via NHL.com praising the core said, “These guys are the greatest core that I’ve certainly been around and witnessed.” He further continues his point, saying, “These guys are in elite company from a core standpoint. … They’re generational talents.” Even the stars offered their views on this achievement.

Per Crosby, “It’s just special. There’s no other way to put it.” He continued that there were several factors that could have altered this situation, but they finally made it. Crosby ended his statement by saying, “You appreciate that. You’re grateful for that, and hopefully, a few more years left here together.” Also, Malkin joined him, uttering the same words: “It’s special, for sure, but nothing’s changed.

However, this record is already under threat, as a close rival is gloriously approaching.

Who Can Be Next Trio to Break This Record?

While the Penguins are happy to possess a unique record, their challenger is also preparing themselves. The current stats reveal that Alex Ovechkin, Nicklas Backstrom and John Carlson of the Washington Capitals are beginning their 15th season together. If they keep on playing together for a few more years, they may surpass the current record as well.

Well, no matter players or trios surpassing each other now and then, Yankees’ trio is forever etched in the hearts of their fans.
