The Toronto Blue Jays are in a weird funk this season. Their win-loss record constantly goes up and down, although they boast some star power. Vladimir Guerrero Jr., winner of the 2023 Home Run Derby, is an impressive force at the plate. Having inherited his dad, Vlad the Impaler’s hitting prowess, Guerrero Sr. also inspired another quality in Jr.: a love for his country.

The Guerreros may be Canadian, but they call the Dominican Republic home. The father-son duo is as known for their dislike of the New York Yankees as they are for their philanthropic efforts. Guerrero Jr. is appreciative of all things DR, especially fellow athletes. And one of them has earned high praise lately.

Marileidy Paulino has once again been a force to be reckoned with this year, establishing her dominance on the track. Running like the wind, the 2020 Olympics medalist has broken long-held records in 2023. And she doesn’t look close to stopping anytime soon. Just yesterday, Paulino attained another massive achievement, and Vladimir Guerreo Jr. is impressed.

After winning the 400-meter Diamond League title in August, the sprinter just earned a second diamond yesterday. In 49.58 seconds, Paulino was the first to cross the finish line at the Diamond League Prefontaine Classic at Hayward Field. Posting about the event to his Instagram story, the Toronto Blue Jays star shared a post from the Dominican Republic’s ESPN.

It shows a powerful visual of Paulino in running motion while lighting strikes around her. She’s a force of nature as electricity flashes through her eyes and the caption calls her, “The Storm of Don Gregorio.” Guerrero’s story caption reads similarly, “The second storm.” It’s a testament to her prowess and a matter of pride for her country.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr., on the other hand, is dealing with some trouble on the professional front.

Historically, the Yankees and the Blue Jays don’t share too much bad blood. Rivals in the same division yes, but while the Yankees have always been focused on the Boston Red Sox, Toronto used to have the Montreal Expos. And yet, the Guerreros are not fans of the Bronx Bombers.

Jr. has often expressed an open dislike for the team, claiming he would rather retire than wear the pinstripes. And the Yankees are unfortunately on the Blue Jays’ tail with a late-season surge now. While the Blue Birds occupy the second Wild Card position, the Yankees are slowly climbing their way up the ranks.

Given the last few games, it’s almost impossible to guess how the season will end. If New York does manage to best Toronto, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. will have yet another reason to not like the team.
