Mike Tyson vs Roy Jones Jr takes place this weekend. The fights on the undercard feature up-and-coming boxers along with amateur boxers. The former New York Knicks point guard Nate Robinson takes on YouTuber Jake Paul in the undercard of the event.
Youtubers foraying into boxing has become a common theme these days. Last year YouTube phenomenon on KSI took on Logan Paul at the Staples Arena in Los Angeles. The two men headlined the event. The undercard featured boxing stars such as Billy Joe Saunders and Devin Haney, among others. This weekend Paul aims to shift his perception from a ‘YouTuber’ to a ‘Boxer’ however his plans do not stop there.
In a recent interview with Barstool Breakfast, Jake Paul was asked if he was serious when he called out the likes of Jorge Masvidal and Ben Askren for a boxing match. He was also asked how he felt he matched up against the aforementioned fighters.
He replied, “Look I’m sparring high high-level professional boxers in Las Vegas. Undefeated guys, guys who are golden gloves amateur champions…. I’m fighting guys with WBA, WBC championships belts and I’m head to head with them”
‘The Problem Child’ continued, “That level of competition is harder than what these MMA guys are bringing. These MMA guys have to go into the gym and have to worry about elbows and kicks and Jiu-Jitu and takedowns and takedown defense all this extra stuff. I’m only boxing. So when they come into the boxing ring, my skillset is higher than theirs right now. I’m ready for these guys right now. So Ben Askren, Masvidal the McGregor’s they’re going to get the smoke.”
The fight against Robinson will be Paul’s third boxing match. He fought Deji Olatunji aka ‘ComedyShortsGamer’ in August 2018 as the co-main event at KSI vs Logan Paul. The fight was an amateur fight.
His first professional fight was against Ali Eson Gib, a fellow YouTuber in January. He stopped his opponent in the very first round of the six-round bout. Jake now has the opportunity to prove himself against a bonafide athlete in Nate Robinson. What do you make of Paul’s callout to the UFC stars?
