Michael Chiesa takes on arguably his biggest test to date in Vicente Luque at UFC 265. ‘Maverick’ has been in the UFC for over nine years now. In that time, he has competed in two weight classes facing the best at both 155-pounds and now 170-pounds. He has never come close to challenging for the title, but a win against Luque will put him in very good position to challenge for the title.
Ahead of his fight against Luque, ‘Maverick’ shared the reason behind his recent resurgence in form. He said, “After I lost to Pettis, I’ll never forget this…. I got home and John Wood called me…. He was like I gotta tell you something Mike, can I give you my two cents? I’m like lets hear it. He goes dude, you need to go back to who you were when I met you. When I met John Wood in 2013, I was fresh off The Ultimate Fighter still that blue-collar hard-working humble kid.”ADVERTISEMENT

‘Maverick’ continued, “I brushed that humble side of me and just tried to turn into this character to appeal to people. To kinda fit the norm of what MMA is now. People love hype, people love the trash talk…. It’s just not true to who I am. And he was just like go back to who you were when I met you. Be that humble hard-working kid that’s what is going to win you fights.”

Prior to being booked for a fight against Colby Covington, welterweight champion Kamaru Usman had expressed his interest in facing Chiesa in a fight. Therefore if he wins, he will most likely fight the winner of Colby Covington vs Kamaru Usman for welterweight gold in the UFC.
What do you make of Michael Chiesa’s fight against Vicente Luque? Do you think he can get a win this weekend?
