The UFC can be ruthless at times in releasing fighters from their contacts in order to get in new talent. Unfortunately for Formiga, his recent record has meant that he is no longer a part of the leading MMA promotion in the world.

The UFC’s men’s flyweight division has had a tough few years. There were rumors that the company would scrap the division altogether due to the lack of talent and attention on the division.

However, the likes of Henry Cejudo and Deiveson Figueiredo have resurrected the division, and it looks as though the division is not going anywhere.

Jussier Formiga leaves the UFC after eight memorable years

Jussier was considered one of the top flyweights in the world before the UFC had a flyweight division. When the UFC started the division in 2012, they immediately signed him.

However, he was never able to realize his full potential in the promotion, coming up short on multiple occasions.

Formiga’s record since joining the promotion is 9-7 with three of those seven losses coming in his last three fights, two of which were knockouts against Joseph Benavidez and Alex Perez.

Formiga holds a win over the current champion and has come close to fighting for the title. However, he has lost out on a few number one contender fights against the likes of Henry Cejudo, Ray Borg, and John Dodson which has meant that he never fought for the title.

At 35-years of age, Formiga does not have a lot of time left in his career at the top. Three losses on the trot for an aging fighter is not a good sign unless it’s a big name as the UFC will always keep a close eye on the situation.

Though there have been no reports on what is next for Formiga, the Brazilian fighter is extremely talented and will find a new promotion to fight under with ease.
