Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier squared off for the first time at UFC 178 in September 2014. At the time Conor was a promising young talent looking to mount a title challenge. Poirier on the other hand was an already established fighter in the featherweight division who represented Conor McGregor’s toughest challenge.

In the buildup to the fight, Conor engaged in relentless trash talk, which got under Dustin’s skin. ‘The Notorious’ was bold in his prediction and stated that he would finish Poirier in the first round of the fight. He lived up to his talk and shifted from a rising talent to a bonafide contender.

Though the first fight did not last too long, it gave fans a glimpse into the striking prowess of Conor McGregor against an elite opponent. ‘The Notorious’ had ‘The Diamond’ backed up against the cage when a perfectly timed left hand dropped Dustin to the floor. A barrage of punches followed, and that was enough for the referee to stop the fight.

A lot has changed since their first fight six years ago. Conor McGregor became the face of the UFC and a superstar in the world. Dustin on the other hand has grown leaps and bound since his move up in weight. He’s fought the best at 155 pounds and has more often than not come out on top.
