Conor McGregor was perhaps the first fighter in the UFC that transcended the sport. He became one of the most well-known athletes all around the world and brought a lot of attention to the promotion. There has never been a figure in MMA as polarizing as Conor McGregor
‘The Notorious‘ entered the promotion as a two-division champion in Cage Warriors. The Irish superstar had made his intentions very clear from day one. He wanted to replicate what he did in his previous promotion in the UFC as well. He wanted to become the first person to hold two belts in the UFC at the same time. At UFC 205 Conor McGregor did exactly that.

Conor McGregor continues to break records four years on from UFC 205
Conor McGregor took to Twitter to celebrate the historic moment. He put out a Tweet that read, “Happy World Champ Champ Day @danawhite, @Amanda_Leoa, @HenryCejudo, @dc_mma. Hope you all had a great day.”

‘The Notorious’ was supposed to challenge Rafael dos Anjos for the lightweight belt. However, an injury forced him out of the card and made for an epic rivalry between McGregor and Nate Diaz. Following his win in the rematch against Diaz, Conor shifted his focus back to the second belt. He fought Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205 for the 155-pound championship.

UFC 205 was the first PPV event held at Madison Square Garden. The UFC put on an absolutely stacked card with three title fights. However, it was Conor McGregor who stole the show with his near-perfect performance against a dangerous opponent in Eddie Alvarez.

The event set multiple records, the live gate at UFC 205 was $17,700,700 this was more than the next three events at Madison Square Garden combined which included the likes of UFC 217, UFC 230, and UFC 244.
Though Conor McGregor has fought in the division only once since his fight against Alvarez, MMA fans will be hoping 2021 is the year they see McGregor in action multiple times at 155 pounds.
