Kamaru Usman is easily one of the most legitimate champions in the UFC right now. He is on a 12-fight UFC win streak and has won his three title fights quite convincingly. He beat Tyron Woodley and Jorge Masvidal in lopsided decisions and knocked Colby Covington out in the fifth-round of a classic in 2019.
Dana White is already putting Usman on the pantheon of greats, mentioning that Usman may break George St-Pierre‘s record of most consecutive wins at Welterweight.
“Usman has tied GSP for most consecutive UFC wins for 12. If he wins here tonight, he breaks GSPs record with 13. He’s on a 16-fight win streak. This guy has not lost in 7 years.

White elaborated, “Usman is one of those quiet killers. This guy doesn’t go out beating his chest. He’s not out acting like a lunatic. He keeps his head down, he works hard, and look at what creeps up on us as he’s about to break GSPs record. If he can get through Gilbert Burns on Saturday night, which is going to be a tough fight. He’s just a guy who’ll keep grinding and then one day we’re all going to wake up and be talking about GOAT status for this guy.”

However, crossing GSP will be very hard. GSP retired as a Middleweight Champion and never saw his streak at Welterweight break. He also won a lot of big fights with the title on the line. For context, GSPs 12th straight win came in his 9th title defense against Johny Hendricks. This will be just Usman’s third title defense.

Usman may have a long way to challenge GSP’s throne, but he is establishing a formidable legacy of his own. A win over Gilbert Burns on Saturday will establish Usman as a genertaional great for this division.
