Jon Jones is without a doubt one of the greatest fighters to have ever stepped into the octagon. His achievements at light heavyweight are mind-boggling. He has been a champion at 205-pounds for the better part of a decade and has never lost a title fight. At 33, with all that he has achieved as a light heavyweight, ‘Bones’ is seeking a new challenge.

His move up to heavyweight will provide just that. Success at heavyweight and winning the belt will cement his legacy as the unquestionable ‘GOAT’. This is something that Jon Jones aspires to be. Furthermore, he will look to reclaim the top spot in the UFC’s pound-for-pound rankings as well.

Daniel Cormier says Jon Jones is extremely smart inside the octagon

In an interview with SCMP MMA, the reporters asked Daniel Cormier about his former rival’s move to heavyweight. ‘DC’ also touched upon ‘Bones’ getting a title shot directly instead of fighting another contender first.

‘DC’ said, “I think he is going to get a title fight. And I don’t see anything wrong with that. You know I think that for all that he has accomplished over the course of his career, if anyone is deserving of an immediate title shot, it is Jon Jones. And I do believe that when he gets to heavyweight, and he’s competing there, he is going to be very successful.”

The former double-champion continued, “You know I’ve competed with the guy on a couple of occasions and felt him and seen him and experienced his skill level. I do believe that with the skill he possesses and the fighting style, and honestly, the guy is smart. He’s a very smart fighter in there. I think that he can take that and it will translate to him being successful at heavyweight.

Jones’ heavyweight debut will be on the back burner for a while. Dana White confirmed that Francis Ngannou will get the next title shot. If Jones were to wait it out and fight for the title, his debut at heavyweight will be towards the second half of 2021.

However, if ‘Bones’ were to accept a tuneup bout at the new weight class before fighting for the title, he could make his heavyweight debut a lot sooner.
