Daniel Cormier has never been one to hide his thoughts, especially since he has a show on ESPN to share them all the time. While the former two-division champion may have ended his career on a two-fight skid, his opinions still hold a lot of weight. He has decided to use his voice and tell the UFC that the next challenger for Jan Blachowicz’s Light Heavyweight title should be Glover Teixeira, and not Israel Adesanya.
“If you talk about what makes the most sense, it’s Adesanya. Champion vs Champion, him going up, the idea it could lead to Jones. It would top Glover in that way. It honestly makes the most business sense, but Glover should be the one fighting for the title next.”

Daniel Cormier admitting that Izzy is the more likely fight due to the marketing aspect is quite a realistic and grounded way of looking at this. While Glover definitely does have a better claim, Izzy is the bigger fight. The UFC wouldn’t want to risk losing the Jan vs Izzy fight to accommodate Glover, so maybe Glover is the first challenger after the Izzy and Jan fight is done.

Daniel Cormier backing Glover over Adesanya
Cormier has echoed the sentiments of most hardcore fans by picking Glover for the fight. However, he has also given the perfect paradox by explaining the reasons why the fight will most likely go to Adesanya. Izzy is a guaranteed money-maker. A super fight with Jan to become champ-champ will easily become one of the best-selling cards of the year.

However, the question of merit is very real. While Izzy has the resume, he doesn’t much hold in the division. Glover has been a regular combatant in the LHW division for years. The fact that he is on a five-fight win streak should be more of a case for a title shot. But that is a puritanical and unrealistic way of looking at it.

Whatever the UFC does, hopefully, Glover does get a title fight. Be it after Izzy or before him, the man has done enough to earn it.
