Dustin Poirier Gets Angry At Inappropriate Question From UFC Analyst

Dustin Poirier sat down with Ariel Helwani of ESPN for a sit-down interview. The fighter is off his biggest career win at UFC 257 over Conor McGregor. That win has made Poirier one of the most intriguing fighters in the UFC, with many wondering if he will be getting a title shot or the title itself.

After Helwani brought up what the situation was with him getting a UFC title, Poirier bluntly responded by saying that the belt enables him to get a piece of the PPV revenue.

“Well, if we’re talking business, when you’re the world champion, you get a PPV share. That’s a big difference.”

However, after Helwani prodded and asked about Poirier’s purse for UFC 257 and whether he got a slice of the PPV revenue, Poirier gave a stern answer.

“Listen, Ariel. I’m not asking you how much ESPN pays you. Me and my family are happy man. I’m doing what I love to do and are making a great living.”

What reaction Dustin Poirier had is completely understandable. Nobody likes it when someone asks anyone about how much money they make. Fighters should be no different. However, the commercialized nature of the industry means that fighters are getting historic payouts and bragging about those. Maybe that is why Helwani proceeded to ask that question. 90% of the fighters would answer that.

However, Poirier doesn’t seem motivated by those same things, until now. He had financial issues while closing a fight with Tony Ferguson last October, which got the fight scrapped. Dustin knows his value to the company and doesn’t want to be short-changed at any point.

His value is that of a UFC Champion, so he should be paid accordingly. Not disclosing what he made at UFC 257 is a personal choice. However, his response to Helwani did seem a lot more stand-offish than a question like that would normally be. Nonetheless, Poirier is entitled to his privacy on that matter.
