Dustin Poirier Reveals Issues With Conor McGregor Booking

Dustin Poirier has been a regular fixture on the headlines in the last few weeks. From his UFC 254 bout against Tony Ferguson falling through to his rumored charity fight against Conor McGregor, Dustin has his name out there.

However, there is no clear sign of what exactly ‘The Diamond’ will do next. While it looks like the Ferguson booking is in the rearview now, there is a chance that still happens. But what is more likely is Poirier vs McGregor. Dustin has revealed some details on ‘The Fight’ with Teddy Atlas.

“I’m not sure. I’m not sure if it’s his want to be active. I am not sure if it’s his want to reach the top again and be the lightweight champion. Honestly, I don’t know, but I’m happy it came about and I’m happy that he wants to fight.”

“I know that he wants to get another fight in before 2021, so he wants to finish this year off with a fight and I think that’s the problem we’re running into getting this thing booked right away… Right now they have a list of events that are already booked with headliners and I think the UFC is angling this to be a new year’s fight. Somewhere in January.”

Dustin Poirier vs Conor McGregor II: Reality or not?

Considering how both men upped the stakes for this by announcing it for charity, the UFC should find a way to make this official. Poirier has already said he feels a fight offer coming his way soon. However, whether the UFC was looking for a McGregor booking is unclear.

The issues that Poirier laid out are very real. The remaining cards for the year all have designated headliners, and figuring out how to insert a Poirier vs McGregor fight is a massive headache. You can’t ask a champion to take a back-seat for a non-title fight, nor can you realistically sell a fight bigger than a Conor McGregor return. He headlined a PPV against Donald Cerrone. What will he get for a high stakes fight against Dustin Poirier?
