Cub Swanson has been in the UFC since 2011. During that time, ‘Killer’ has shared the octagon with some of the very best UFC featherweights. After his recent win over Darren Elkins, Swanson called out fellow UFC veteran Urijah Faber for a fight.

In a recent interview, Swanson put forward a rather interesting idea for a fight between him and Urijah Faber. He said, “After fighting a stretch of up-and-comers, I was excited to fight Elkins because it was somebody that’s been around for a while, someone there’s tons of tape on, somebody close to my age.”

‘Killer’ continued, “There were a lot of things where I was like, ‘Ah, we’re two veterans, we’re going to go and throw down.’ I  think fighting Urijah is the same thing on another level. People love him and people have loved me for years, so I think it always makes for a great fight. We should have fought many, many times and just never did, so why not now.”

“We should do it for an honorary WEC belt. They did the ‘BMF’ belt, so why not? Throwback.” (h/t MMAJunkie)

Cub Swanson vs Urijah Faber- a fight 18 years in the making

Both Faber and Swanson joined the UFC after the promotion acquired the now-defunct WEC. Faber was at one point the featherweight champion in the promotion. However, after a few losses, he moved down to 135-pounds and has competed there ever since. Swanson, on the other hand, has competed at 145-pounds for the majority of his career.

In a recent interview, Faber stated that he was offered a fight against Swanson in 2004 with a local MMA promotion, but the fight never took place.

‘The California Kid’ last competed in the UFC in 2019 when he succumbed to a loss against Petr Yan. He has not competed since, however, he has stayed within the USADA’s testing pool so as to accept a good opportunity should it come his way.

Faber responded positively to Swanson’s call-out on social media for a fight. ‘Killer’ also mentioned that he would have no problems dropping down to 135-pounds to accept a fight against Faber. It will be interesting to see if a fight between the two men actually comes to fruition in the UFC.
