Welterweight champion Kamaru Usman has been extremely active thus far in 2021. He has defended his belt in quick succession against the likes of Gilbert Burns and Jorge Masvidal to firmly place himself amongst the elite champions at 170-pounds. ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ believes that he is so far ahead of his competition that he is now taking on rematches to assert his dominance at welterweight.

Former welterweight title challenger Stephen Thompson shared his thoughts on the UFC’s decision to grant Colby Covington a rematch against Kamaru Usman over the likes of Leon Edwards.

He said, “Why!? Why? The guy literally got stopped, he got his jaw broken, had one fight (against Tyron Woodley) and now he’s fighting again for the title. They’re just throwing the same guys at Usman over and over and over again. I figured Leon Edwards, somebody different, he hasn’t fought him in several years. But at least it’s somebody different. Somebody that’s kind of worked his way back up. What’s he on, a nine-fight winning streak? I don’t get why they didn’t give him the fight! Little disappointed in where the UFC is going with that.”

Kamaru Usman vs Colby Covington 2 targeted for an epic clash at Madison Square Garden
Dana White has maintained time and time again that the first fight between Colby Covington and Kamaru Usman was without a doubt one of the best fights he had ever seen. Therefore, after ‘Chaos’ convincingly beat Tyron Woodley, there was no doubt in his mind that he wanted to get the rematch done as soon as possible.
Ever since MMA was given the green light in New York state, the UFC has held an event at Madison Square Garden almost every year. The promotion hopes to host UFC 268 there in front of a full attendance crowd.
Many in the welterweight division believe that Covington did not deserve the title shot since he won only one fight since his loss to Usman. However, he was the fighter who pushed Usman further than anyone else had done in his career. Therefore, a rematch between ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ and ‘Chaos’ makes a lot of sense.
