MMA veteran Jacare Souza suffered a severely broken arm during his fight against Andre Muniz at UFC 262. They fought in the last match of the preliminary card where Muniz won after locking an armbar submission in the first round.

The medical team took Souza to a local hospital shortly after his fight. Souza’s longtime doctor, Rickson Moraes, in an interview said that an X-ray showed he had fractured his right humerus.

The Brazilian is expected to undergo surgery in the United States itself and won’t be flying back to Brazil for further checkups. The doctor, though, said Souza is fine for now.

ESPN’s Ariel Helwani took to Twitter and shared his brief talk with Souza. He wrote, “Jacare Souza is having surgery on his arm tomorrow, he tells me. His arm broke above his elbow. “The UFC is giving me all the support,” he said. “When the world stopped, the UFC was moving and taking care of all the athletes.”

“He is in good spirits and not in pain, he said.”

In an interview, Muniz reflected on his win against Souza. “I had to work on my jiu-jitsu twice as hard for this one because I knew I’d face one of the highest levels of jiu-jitsu in MMA, and I had to be ready,” he said.

“I’m a huge fan of Jacare. I’ve followed his career for a long time so it hasn’t really hit me yet that I beat him. It’s unbelievable what I did today. I didn’t want to break his arm but, unfortunately, that was the situation. I knew he wouldn’t tap.”

It doesn’t need a second thought that Souza will be out of action for quite a while. More than injury, he would be worried about his recent performances, which haven’t been good enough either.
