UFC 262 saw a new UFC lightweight champion getting coronated as Charles Oliveira defeated Michael Chandler to capture the coveted belt.

The finish was perfect with Oliveira scoring a second-round TKO over Chandler, but the judging of the first round became a hot topic with Daniel Cormier raising a debate over the same.

Recently, in an episode of ‘DC and Helwani’, Cormier ripped into the score of 10-8 given by the judges in the first round between Oliveira and Chandler.

We have to discuss that 10-8 Round 1,” he said. “Because Michael Chandler won that round but when Charles Oliveira gets you down, takes your back, does good things in the round, how in the world are you scoring that 10-8 as a judge?”

He further said, “The reality is, the judges are so afraid and they really don’t wanna give a 10-7 round. But if that is 10-8 round, what is worse? What do you have to do in order to go 10-7?”

‘DC’ then recalled the match between Glover Teixeira and Anthony Smith. The former had absolutely dominated Smith, but that round was awarded 10-8.

How in the world can you judge these two rounds the same when one was absolute beating and the other (Chandler vs Oliveira) was a competitive round?” he asked.

The former dual division champ said the judges should be more careful in their scoring as they could have cost Oliveira the match if it would have gone the distance.

“You are taking responsibility for people’s livelihoods and their careers. You have to watch carefully,” he concluded.

Daniel Cormier doesn’t see Chandler fighting for the title anytime soon

After his loss against ‘Do Bronx’, Chandler (22-6) had said that he will fight again for the title within 12 months. But ‘DC’ opines that it isn’t possible for Chandler to fight again for the belt soon.

He said it’s certain that either Dustin Poirier or Conor McGregor will fight for the championship next. The duo is slated for their blockbuster trilogy bout at UFC 264.

However, Cormier believes that a fight with Justin Gaethje next could propel ‘Iron’ to the title picture. But for that to happen, he has to hope Gaethje doesn’t go for the title next. The latter has been out of action since his loss to ‘The Eagle’ Khabib Nurmagomedov last year.

Regardless of all the prospects and inclinations, it would definitely take a while before Chandler gets into the title picture. It all depends on how UFC sees things going ahead.

Do you agree with Cormier’s opinion on judging?
