In the 11 years that Dustin Poirier has been with the UFC, ‘The Diamond’ has fought in two weight classes. Poirier started at 145-pounds where he made a name for himself. He later moved up to 155-pounds when he realized that he was severely depleting his body, which did not lead to good performances. At 155-pounds ‘The Diamond’ established himself as an elite fighter, not just at lightweight, but in the UFC period.

In a recent interview with Laura Sanko, Dustin Poirier shared his thoughts on potentially moving up to 170-pounds and challenging for the title. He said, “Of course I would those are some big guys, man. We’ll see, I definitely think I can fight at 170. Honestly, right now at 155, my metabolism has kinda caught up.”

‘The Diamond’ continued, “When I was cutting to 145, between fights, I would get a lot heavier than I do now. I just think my metabolism was getting messed up and holding onto a lot of weight. I would shoot up to 190 (pounds) when I was fighting at 145…. But I think I can fight at 170 as well.”

Dustin Poirier is not a small lightweight fighter by any means. ‘The Diamond’ stands at 5’9” with a reach of 72-inches. Although Poirier does not struggle massively to make weight at 155-pounds, he can easily compete at 170-pounds as well.

There are a few extremely interesting matchups possible for Poirier at 170-pounds. If ‘The Diamond’ were to secure a win over Oliveira and claim the lightweight belt, it could set up a super fight against the 170-pound champion.

Kamaru Usman has stated he will not go up to 185-pounds as long as Adesanya is the champion there. Therefore, fighting Dustin Poirier might give Usman the super fight he is craving.

Similarly, if Covington beats Usman later on this year, a fight between ‘Chaos’ and ‘The Diamond’ has all the makings of a home run for the promotion. However, there are a lot of things that have to fall in order for this to materialize.
