The existence of the flyweight division in the UFC was under scrutiny for a long period of time. White and the rest of his team were considering scrapping the division altogether. However, with the emergence of stars such as Brandon Moreno and Deiveson Figueiredo, the division has been brought back to life.

Brandon Moreno won the belt earlier this year with a dominant display against the champion Deiveson Figueiredo. ‘The Assassin Baby’ now has his eyes set on defending his title and has a few names in mind.

In a recent interview, Moreno shared a list of names that he was interested in. He said, “It’s obvious Figueiredo wants the next one because he lost the last one. But man, the last fight, I dominated him, in the first round, in striking, in grappling, in wrestling, so obviously I’m open to fight again with him. But I think he needs to fight with somebody. Cody Garbrandt wants to come in to the division… I know he’s not in the best part of his career, but he’s a good name. He’s a former champ. He has a really good brand behind him. He’s an option.”

The Assassin Baby’ continued, “Right now, I’m thinking about going back to the gym. I’ll be prepared for October or November. I think November is better. I don’t care the name. I just want to fight in that month.”

Who should be next for champion Brandon Moreno?

There is a lot of momentum gathering behind Cody Garbrandt vs Brandon Moreno for the flyweight title. While ‘No Love’ is a big name in the sport and would mean a big payday for Moreno, Garbrandt is 1-4 in his last five fights. Therefore, giving him a title shot does not make sense.

Additionally, Askar Askarov, currently on a three-fight win streak, has looked impressive in all of his wins. Moreno said he would be willing to fight him. However, as Askarov is currently nursing an injury, he will not be able to fight in November, which is when the champion intends to fight. Therefore, the challenger spot is up for grabs. It will be interesting to see who the UFC matches up against Moreno.
