Both Conor McGregor and Max Holloway have claimed to being the greatest fighter in the Featherweight division. Conor knocked Jose Aldo off his perch in spectacular fashion, but never returned to the division. In the meantime, Holloway beat Aldo twice to take the crown for himself. Max has since lost back-to-back fights to Alexander Volkanovski (with the second one being a little controversial).

The reason Conor got to Aldo before Holloway goes back to a 2013 meeting between the then rising Featherweight prospects. Both fighters were green, but Holloway was evidently a step behind Conor. Conor won the three-round affair decisively, sweeping the scorecards. One judge even scored a 10-8 in favor of Conor. The two have never rematched, despite both of them being active fighters.

McGregor discussed the Holloway fight on Twitter, talking about how he ruptured his ACL in the fight and stumbled after a head kick from Holloway, which wasn’t counted as a knockdown.

Holloway and Conor have never rematched because Holloway’s only attempt at Lightweight was thwarted by Dustin Poirier, with Holloway evidently crumbling under a massive power disparity. Conor never returned to Featherweight after his 13-second KO of Jose Aldo.

Conor McGregor and the chances of him facing Max Holloway again

One can’t argue that this would be a dream fight. With the case for Featherweight G.O.A.T. still being relatively open-ended, Max Holloway and Conor McGregor can fight to see who’s better. However, it may be impossible for Conor to cut to 145 again. He struggled to make weight during his stint there and has since fought at Welterweight multiple times.

Holloway isn’t too big on the weight cut either, being pulled from a card once because of a bad weight cut. What is shocking is that it was for a fight at 155, and not 145. His eventually move to Lightweight showed the problems he would face in that division. Holloway is currently 1-3 in his last four fights and will be on the rebound track.

It is unlikely that these two men meet up in the cage again. Both have goals in different divisions, and the stars just don’t seem to align for this fight.
