Colby Covington has wanted nothing but a rematch against Kamaru Usman since their first encounter at UFC 245. ‘Chaos’ has stated multiple times that his performance in the first fight was overshadowed by the ‘fake stoppages’ that helped Usman secure a stoppage win later on.

Almost two years on from the first fight, Covington now has his second shot at the title and a chance to avenge his loss against Kamaru Usman. In a recent interview, Chael Sonnen shared his thoughts on everything he had seen from Covington leading up to the rematch.

He said, “I have been very impressed. I mean, even in that interview where he was attempting to appear to be removing the fourth wall, letting you peek behind the curtain, he wasn’t. The great performer was staying in character…. And there is part of that when you’re playing that. When you’re looking for attention, when you know I am in the attention-seeking business. I have got a chip on my shoulder, I legitimately have put in the work….. In all fairness, he is out there performing. He says he is being himself he turned it up to 11. Of the pie that’s a little bit of a piece of it.”

Sonnen continued, “He went out and created this. He created something that is of interest. And yes, he is hated, and he is one of the few guys that does not mind it that. He realizes that if he wants to be loved, that end of the pool is a bit crowded. And if I go down here, and every story needs a villain, I can be the biggest draw with the black hat on.”

Kamaru Usman has slowly established himself as one of the best welterweight champions the UFC has ever seen. ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ will put his belt on the line for the fifth time against Covington in a rematch.

The first match ended with a stoppage win for Usman. For Covington, a loss would mean this will be his last shot at the title as long as Usman is the champion. Few fighters in the UFC have been given a third title shot after going 0-2 against the champion. Therefore, fans can expect the best version of Covington at UFC 268 as there is a lot on the line for ‘Chaos’.
