Michael Chiesa took on Vicente Luque in a welterweight clash at UFC 265. Both men came into the fight on the back of impressive four-fight win streaks. The common consensus was that the winner of the fight would take on the winner of Covington vs Usman, which will take place in November this year.

Unfortunately for Chiesa, after a promising start and almost securing a submission himself, he succumbed to a D’Arce choke by Luque. Following the loss, Chiesa took to Instagram to share his thoughts on what had transpired. He said, “I want to jump out in front of this now.First and most importantly, congrats to @luquevicente, he’s a stone-cold killer and a class act. I look forward to seeing what’s next for him. It was an honor sharing the octagon with him.To say I’m embarrassed is an understatement.”

Maverick continued, “Physically I was in the best shape of my life, mentally I was battling myself every single day. I put too much pressure on myself this fight and I cracked. Historically throughout my career, every time I have faced adversity and came up short, I’ve turned around and grown tremendously. A couple more wins and I’ll be back in the mix. The goal remains the same, my belief is still just as strong and I love every single person that supports me so much that it hurts.”

What is next for Michael Chiesa?

‘Maverick’ has been in the UFC since June 2012 when he won The Ultimate Fighter. During his time with the promotion, he has faced the best the UFC has offered in not one but two weight classes. Chiesa has been in a similar position where a win would have meant a shot at UFC gold but has come up short. Chiesa came up short against Lee and he fought for UFC gold in his very next fight.

A win against Luque would have guaranteed that he would fight for UFC gold in his next fight. However, Chiesa has come up short once again. Chiesa has been very good at bouncing back from setbacks and putting together an impressive win streak. It will not be any different this time around, as there are several good fights for him in the UFC’s welterweight division.
