During his time away from the sport, Conor McGregor has taken to Twitter multiple times to call out anyone and everyone in the combat sports community. One of the many fighters that ‘The Notorious’ is interested in fighting is long-time UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman.

‘The Notorious’ has fought thrice in the welterweight division with two wins and one loss to his name. He has made it no secret that he would like to fight for a third belt and become the first person in the UFC to have won belts in three divisions.

In a recent Q&A session on Twitter, McGregor shared his thoughts on Colby Covington’s performance against Kamaru Usman at UFC 268. He said, “Thought Colby lumped him up nice last fight. Finished stronger. Without that 2nd round knockdown it’s Colby’s fight imo. If even still. I see many holes. As well as a suspect dome. I fancy it greatly for the treble.”

Conor McGregor to take on Kamaru Usman on his return?

‘The Notorious’ provided an injury update in one of his recent tweets. He stated that he would be back to full mixed martial arts sparring in April and make a return soon after. Given that McGregor is the biggest name in combat sports at the moment, there is no shortage of opponents to take him on.

Both welterweight and lightweight are viable options for ‘The Notorious’. At lightweight, a fourth fight with Dustin Poirier or fights against the likes of Michael Chandler are options that stand out. Similarly, at welterweight a much-awaited trilogy against Nate Diaz awaits. Many believe that the trilogy will be the fight McGregor takes on in his return given Diaz is on the last fight of his UFC contract.

There is little to no chance that McGregor gets a title shot immediately at welterweight against Kamaru Usman. However, if he fights Nate Diaz at welterweight and earns a win, a title shot at 170-pounds might be something that both the UFC and ‘The Notorious’ might consider.
