UFC middleweight elite Kelvin Gastelum was in shock after a close unanimous decision loss against Jared Cannonier in the main event of UFC Vegas 34. The American, who had suffered a similar unanimous decision loss to Robert Whittaker in April, desperately needed a win here to remain in contention for a title shot.

After his loss, the American took to Twitter and wrote, “I think I won but whatever…” This statement summed up his mood as he slipped to his fifth loss in the last six fights.

Talking about the match, it was a battle of swiftness versus power. Cannonier was throwing his punches with fire while Gastelum started with fast combinations and also displayed very strong footwork. ‘The Killa Gorilla’ constantly avoided Gastelum’s strikes in the early going, but he began slowing down towards the latter half of the second round.

Gastelum took control of the match by landing some strikes, but Cannonier cut short his dominance as he unloaded an enormous right to send the former title contender to the canvas. As the fight moved towards the championship rounds, Cannonier was still finding his range and his punches struck Gastelum hard each time the former welterweight stepped up to engage.
