Khamzat Chimaev was undoubtedly the biggest breakout star in 2020. The 26-year-old burst onto the scene on fight Island and in the blink of an eye became one of the biggest names in the UFC. ‘Borz’ has three fights and three finishes in the UFC, the most recent one being a 17-second knockout of veteran Gerald Meerschaert.

‘Borz’ fought three times in his first two months in the promotion. However, due to the lingering effects of the coronavirus, ‘Borz’ has not been able to compete since September 2020. White stated that his comeback fight would be a litmus test against a top-ranked opponent. If recent reports are true, it looks as though Chimaev is set for a mega-fight.

Will Khamzat Chimaev welcome Nick Diaz back to the octagon?

Chimaev recently took to Instagram to share a photo of him alongside Nick Diaz. The caption said, “@nickdiaz209 surprise surprise i’m coming for you #209”

The elder Diaz brother was in attendance at UFC 261. In the post-fight press conference, Dana White confirmed that Diaz was in attendance to talk to him about a potential comeback fight. White further stated that Chimaev vs Diaz was a possibility.

Diaz has been away from the sport for six years now. His last bout was a no-contest in January 2015 against Anderson Silva. Diaz is not only an excellent fighter but one of the biggest names in the UFC.

A fight against Diaz will do Chimaev a world of good. If he is able to beat a former title contender and a top name in Diaz, he will establish himself as a bonafide contender. On the other hand, if a 37-year-old fighter who has been out of action for 6 years is able to beat ‘Borz,’ it would derail the hype train that is Khamzat Chimaev.
